@coldacid I can't believe such a sympathetic take on Andrew Scheer was published by the *Toronto Star*.

@emacsen It's terrible that Rabbi Gopin was attacked. Jews should be proud of their commitment to justice. That being said, the attack on Rabbi Gopin was not necessarily by a fascist sympathiser. @fitheach Indeed. It's already sufficiently bizarre that the HoC rejects the main policy of the government, but does not want that goverment replaced at this time.I gather that the current polls point to inconclusive results in a General Election; is that your read?Is it true that the government doesn't plan to prevent the bill from passing the Lords, and will not advise the Queen to refuse assent to it?#Brexit

@fitheach Well, it's possible (again I'm not very familiar with the polls) that a major part of public sentiment is desire to bring the #Brexit argument to an end in the near future, one way or another. If that is a major factor, then parties imposing delay will lose support to parties pledging speedy resolution. The recent behaviour of PM Johnson suggests that this may be the #Tory theory of the electorate.

@fitheach @GwenfarsGarden Well, if PM Johnson were going to resist the bill, wouldn't he have instructed #Tory lords to delay it?It's possible that the EU will refuse an extension if no deal is achieved before October 31st, but it looks as if the current UK government will abide by this law... unless they get a majority in an election before then.#Brexit

@fitheach Interesting. I would have thought it was a matter of royal prerogative, between the sovereign and her first minister, and not subject to judicial review. I recall that that was the ruling for a similar case here in Canada ten years ago or so, when the PM was granted an early general election, notwithstanding a fixed election date law that he himself had brought in.But of course the constitutional law of the Canada branched off from that of the UK long ago.#canpol #ukpol

@fitheach Thanks for the documents.I don't think those paragraphs hold up very well. Yes, the prorogation was intended to restrict Parliament's ability to interfere with the government's plans for #Brexit, but events have proven that Parliament did in fact retain sufficient power to scrutinise and even to bind. If the prorogation had started a week earlier and lasted until the start of November, then this finding would be more plausible.#ukpol

@fitheach I'm curious: what is the relationship between supporters of the #independence movement and #republicanism in #Scotland? Mostly overlapping sets perhaps?

@fitheach I thought the pur et dur independentists (is there a preferred term in Scotland?) would probably be republicans as well.Do you think that there's much republican sentiment among those who wish to remain in the UK?

#AndrewCoyne in the *NP*"Where the Tories seem intent on bribing voters, one absurdly microtargeted tax credit after another, the Grits prefer to swindle them, with policies so devoid of detail or any sense of how they could be practically achieved that they dissolve on contact."https://nationalpost.com/news/politics/election-2019/andrew-coyne-bad-policy-versus-no-policy-the-real-difference-between-the-conservatives-and-liberals#canpol

Liberals promise "not merely to reduce Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions to 30 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030 — a target it is nowhere near, and not likely to achieve — but to reduce them to “net zero” by 2050. How would it succeed in such a remote and exalted ambition, when it has failed so signally in the present?I’ll let the environment minister, Catherine McKenna, answer: “The point is right now, we need to get elected… If we are re-elected we will look at how best to do this.” Oh."

@fitheach @sohkamyung That sort of confusion must be vexing. Many years ago, I was touring Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul. Pointing up to a beautiful crystal chandelier, the local guide explained that it was "English", imported in the 19th century. On further investigation, I realised that it had actually been produced in Waterford.#EveryoneKnowsMyNeighbours

@fitheach @sohkamyung The story was from the #BBC? I would have expected better from them.Probably the writer, editor and everyone else involved live in London.

I see that Mastodon 3.0 has been released, removing OStatus support. My instance only supports OStatus, so that means as 3.0 rolls out, my connections with the rest of the ActivityPub fediverse will gradually be cut.Au revoir, tout le monde ! À bientôt, j'espère.

@espectalll You can't really trust any leaks from difficult negotiations, but the message at the following link, from a Downing Street source, is interesting:https://blogs.spectator.co.uk/2019/10/how-number-10-view-the-state-of-the-negotiations/#Brexit

@espectalll Not sure exactly what you mean here. If you're saying that they're focusing on high stakes negotiations with foreign leaders — well of course they are. If you're saying that their desire to achieve #Brexit one way or another is out of step with public sentiment — that might be true, but personally I don't really know the present state of public opinion in the UK. (I know @fitheach opposes, but not how representative he is.) Do we have useful polling results?

@fitheach @espectalll Do you have any idea whether British public sentiment is more strongly worried about a no-deal #Brexit or desires to get things over with? I see a recent poll giving Tories + Brexit party 47% support, so perhaps the latter.Regarding the *Spectator* article, the source is clearly trying to lay blame on the Benn Act and Taoiseach Varadkar for failure of the latest British #Brexit proposal. That could be true, but it's obviously self-serving.
