Yeah. This account is really only pseudo-anon as google will cough up my real identity associated with this handle if you dig enough but I still wasn't thrilled to see my firstname-lastname email address accidentally posted in the clear in a reply for however long it took for the deletion to fully propagate across the Fediverse. lol

It's in the (newish?) "Extra features" section of the Settings in Fedilab. Enable the toggle for "Extra features" and then further down the same setting page there's another toggle for "Display the Quote button" under Icons for extra features.

Yeah, multi post threads like that are annoying here in the Fediverse. Doesn't setting the privacy setting on the followups in the thread to "unlisted" stop them from littering up people's timelines at least though? I read somewhere that was the normal way to do it on Mastodon if you had to multipost threads.

@tallshipI understand where you're coming from, I'm just old enough to remember Eternal September. Transition and growth periods can be painful. The way I figure it though, those that are still here at least have demonstrated some stickwithitness and are probably the more adaptable ones.As for why they ended up on Mastodon instead of a part of the Fediverse that might suit them better, well it's purely visibility I think. As a prior Twitter user I can tell you Mastodon was pretty much the only one getting mentioned as the alternative, for the most part during that panicked period. Probably for the best for the bulk of the initial tide of new people anyway just on a capacity basis, although I did at least try to do some basic education on the alternatives once I'd done my own research into them. I even replied with that same diagram a few times if they seemed open to hearing about other options. Now that the ebb has happened they'll eventually figure out where they actually fit here on the Fediverse with a little help. I've been trying to offer suggestions when the opportunity arises. I try to remember we were all new once and a lot of these ex Tweeters are experiencing switching platforms for the very first time in their entire online life. They don't necessarily have a frame of reference to know how to lurkmore and get a feel for new terrain.@Zerglingman @tallship

A thinner laptop floppy mechanism might just fit under there.

Another option might be a Gotek. They can be cased much thinner than a normal floppy drive.

@laurenIt's unenforceable outside the US. At worst it just causes the USA to become less dominant in the social media space as platforms that don't have a US business presence can tell them to go pound sand.@volkris

@twitterrejectYou definitely need to read past the headlines, there's a lot more going on here. Here's the details of Iowa's new legislation, for example:"allow: 14- and 15-year-olds to work evening work shifts ending at 9 p.m. (currently 7 p.m.). During summers, 11 p.m. would be the latest (currently 9 p.m.). Working up to 6 hours a day during the school year (currently 4 hours.). 17-year-olds to work the same hours as adults.""in Section 92.24: If teens participate in a work-based learning or a school or employer work-related program, the state’s workforce development director would have the discretion to waive prohibitions on minors working in manufacturing, mining, and food processing""If a minor becomes ill, is injured, or killed, companies would be shielded from liability. (Exception: Only the highest standard, gross negligence or willful misconduct could be filed in civil court.) No workers’ compensation claims, either."https://iowacapitaldispatch.com/2023/02/24/proposed-child-labor-law-change-would-put-kids-in-harms-way/@zleap @Radical_EgoCom

@Radical_EgoComEducation is important, yes. It's not on everyone to do it though. "From each, according to their ability." Education isn't going to be everyone's strength, and that's okay. We can all contribute in our own ways.@FinalOverdrive

@otsoClose to correct and yet completely misses the point. The solution to the inadequacy of surgical masks to prevent infection from an airborne virus isn't "no masks", it's proper N95 rated masks which are effective, not exclusively to but especially in high risk medical settings.@hannu_ikonen

Those are all completely valid criticisms of surgical masks. They are not designed nor certified for protections from airborne viruses. N-95s work on a completely different different principle and actually do provide effective protection. I recommend the video I have linked here if you want to better understand how N-95s work.https://youtu.be/vBJpvdZXxcs

Covid is an airborne virus and requires airborne virus countermeasures. The only masks we *should* be talking about in regards to covid are N-95 rated (or better). Talking about surgical masks in regards to covid makes no sense unless you're a time traveller from the first half of 2020.

@cliveIt's good to see a spoiled CEO accidentally exposing the ridiculousness of providing free moderation labour to a for-profit business. Rarely do you see them admit to the grift so clearly.

@JohnShirley2023Erasure, as in using legislation and threat of violence to make it effectively illegal and/or physically untenable to exist in public as a trans person. Excluding people from public life unless they return to "the closet" isn't dissimilar from other forms of cultural genocide (criminalizing indigenous spiritual and cultural practices or use of native language, for example).@Blort @fcktheworld587

@EdSThere's a fine line between flaw/bug and designing for a minimum viable system. I haven't looked at this particular aspect of MS BASIC myself yet but when you're targeting a language to tight constraints like fitting in a few KB of ROM or running within a few KB of working RAM space you can end up making some decisions that look absolutely wacky when removed from the original context.@brouhaha

"Wind machines, on-shore or off-shore, demonstrably cannot replace the energy services furnished by fossil-fired steam plants."That depends entirely on what you're using those fossil-fired steam plants for. Where I live (Ontario, Canada) 100% of our baseload generation is covered by a combination of nuclear and hydroelectric. We currently rely on a roughly 50/50 mix of nat gas generators and wind to cover peak demand loads. We used to rely on a mix of nat gas and coal fired generators. We did, in fact, replace peak demand coal generation with wind generation, completely removing coal generation from our energy mix here in the process.

@GrandalfI'm actually one of those people who's fine with nuclear as a bridging "right now" part of a transitional energy mix. A "devil's bargain", perhaps, but an increasingly necessary one due to how long we've procrastinated on reducing carbon emissions. As for building new reactors my understanding is the biggest problem (aside from public opposition) is lack of people with current experience in the industry. The west largely stopped building them for so long that the workforce to do so has shrunk to the point that it's a more expensive proposition than ever before. Here in Canada we still have a lot of experience, albeit aging, but only specifically with our CANDU design heavy water reactors which despite their significant safety advantages aren't suitable for universal deployment everywhere. (You need ready access to a natural uranium supply* and a large investment in production facilities to make the required heavy water.)*CANDU reactors can technically use reprocessed weapons grade fissile material as a feed stock as well, but rather obviously that is also something most countries don't just have lying around either.@publius

@publiusI mean I said "perhaps" for a reason. The vast majority of public opposition at least here in Ontario revolves around the management of nuclear waste. Personally I don't feel like it's an insurmountable problem, but it's definitely a contentious subject that is a very real barrier to building new reactor capacity.@Grandalf

@martinvermeerHopefully, yeah. The current state of that generation is not great in that regard. My one teenage nephew was absolutely aghast that I imported a latam market phone to get the model I wanted. I had to explain to him that just because my cellular provider doesn't approve doesn't automatically mean it's illegal. 🤦@hacks4pancakes
