This is why they want child labor to come back

@Radical_EgoCom @zleap I worked all through high school since it was the only way to fund my drug habit. I graduated just fine after 6 years

@twitterreject @Radical_EgoCom Kids can work in the UK however they still need to attend school so the work cannot impact on that.I think they can still do a paper round not that many people get a daily paper any more.

@zleap @Radical_EgoCom I started working at age 12 cutting lawns. I was a caddy at 13 & dishwasher at 14. I was never allowed to miss school over it. I know the motives for companies using kids are bad but I really don’t think there’s anything wrong with kids working if their parents allow it. This entire thing seems like either pearl clutching or just automatically attacking anything from Republicans. I don’t think this is a winning argument to fight for dems.

@twitterreject @Radical_EgoCom As with anything workers need protection from being exploited, so any rules regarding kids working should be to put their welfare first. Kids who are working are also gaining valuable work experience too. Something that employers should value.

@zleap @Radical_EgoCom I agree with all this. Issue I’m having is these posts are making it seem like kids were previously prevented from working and now they’re going to be allowed to and that shouldn’t happen. I didn’t click on the stories bc the headlines just made me mad. If it’s simply that they are removing laws that protected kids at work, then the headlines should say that. But the implications were that kids could now work and that’s bad.

@twitterrejectYou definitely need to read past the headlines, there's a lot more going on here. Here's the details of Iowa's new legislation, for example:"allow: 14- and 15-year-olds to work evening work shifts ending at 9 p.m. (currently 7 p.m.). During summers, 11 p.m. would be the latest (currently 9 p.m.). Working up to 6 hours a day during the school year (currently 4 hours.). 17-year-olds to work the same hours as adults.""in Section 92.24: If teens participate in a work-based learning or a school or employer work-related program, the state’s workforce development director would have the discretion to waive prohibitions on minors working in manufacturing, mining, and food processing""If a minor becomes ill, is injured, or killed, companies would be shielded from liability. (Exception: Only the highest standard, gross negligence or willful misconduct could be filed in civil court.) No workers’ compensation claims, either."https://iowacapitaldispatch.com/2023/02/24/proposed-child-labor-law-change-would-put-kids-in-harms-way/@zleap @Radical_EgoCom

@Radical_EgoCom That among other reasons. It's also driven by a determination to build back US manufacturing by any means necessary, and they're willing to use child labor to do it.

@mnemonicoverload @zleap @Radical_EgoCom @twitterreject Further, consider that there's a pattern to *which* children will be, by their familiy cirumstances, funneled to late-night McJobs; and which will instead have the luxury of sleep before the, say, AP exams.I got my first job at age 14 as a grocery clerk (unless you count babysitting, in which case age 12). I don't have a problem with, say, apprenticeships. But it should be safe, OPTIONAL, and not a way to suppress adults' wages.

@Radical_EgoCom But wait! There is more!Hiring kids is less expensive, so kids are more likely to be hired and adults less likely, which will create unemployment in the adults and the adults with kids will HAVE to send them to work. It's a dog that chases it's tail.

@twitterreject @zleap @Radical_EgoCom "if their parents allow it" Their parents are poor and don't have the choice. What are you on about? You're trying out a pro-exploitation-of-minors argument to see how far you can push it. Thankfully, the answer is "not far at all".But you ARE a contender for "Most disgusting human I've seen online today", so - congrats?Of COURSE it's a winning argument for Dems - pointing out regressive, abusive GOP policies always is.Also, BLOCKED

@truthat @twitterreject @Radical_EgoCom@kolektiva.sociaWe are certainly NOT pro exploitation, we were just saying that kids can and do work. Regulations need to be in place so teenagers can get a job, perhaps on a Saturday to help their parents business, usually this is their own choice, the can gain valable life skills, work experience etc. They are also engaged in meaningful activility that keeps them away from criminal exploitation, for example county lines for example.I think in the UK the min age is 14, but teenagers have done paper rounds for generations for example.l

@mmlvx @mnemonicoverload @zleap@Radical_EgoCom@kolektiva.social @twitterreject I had various part time jobs as a teen which didn't impact on my school performance, but I grew up in Britain where there are regulations against excessive child labour and they are enforced. Even so, my best paying Saturday job was selling cigarettes/tobacco from a supermarket kiosk (run by a Big Tobacco company!) as young as 17; it was only in the 2000s that the EU stopped teens being allowed to work in such places until 18..

@zleap @truthat I am all on board with that. There needs to be protections from the govt to protect them. But they should also be able to work if it’s relatively safe. Even in my teens, I rarely worked more than 1 school night a week and was done by 10 or 11 at latest. It was always weekends and summers so as not to interfere with school. I was doing this at age 12. My entire point was that the headlines made it seem like kids couldn’t work before and now they can which wasn’t true

@zleap @truthat and if that’s the case, based purely on being one of the 99% of people who didn’t read the full story, it gives the impression of dems being overprotective & interfering in how republicans are raising their kids to work. The headlines present a very different picture and it’s little things like that which can help sway independent voters. Rather than people actually seeing the story about rolling back safety protections to endanger teens, that’s much different

@zleap @Radical_EgoCom here’s an example. What’s wrong with teens doing roofing? I did construction and siding when I was 15 over the summer. Tough work but it was cool to learn.
