@w3c These are more or less marketing buzzwords. "Web 2.0" includes much of our modern web, and its key thing seems to be client-side processing. I want to call the SPA (single-page application) era "Web 2.1" and maybe, just to avoid confusion with the new crypto-based web3, we can call our next movement for newer semantic/federated tech (i.e. AP/Matrix) Web 2.5 or skip it and go straight to Web 4.Maybe I'll write a blog post to more officially coin one of these, so what do you think?

Are there any XEPs which use non-JID identifiers, like URIs, as to or from? Just curious if it's been done, as I'm considering writing an XEP that allows using mailto: URIs to send emails.#xmpp

@thenewoil Important to note: Mozilla plans to deprecate Manifest v2 at the end of 2023, too. It spells the death of all adblockers as we know it, unless Mozilla (or Big Ads) changes course and comes up with something better, like maybe an "experimental" API that only works on Firefox, or just actually keeping Manifest v2 alive indefinitely, like they pretend they said.

I'm starting to think it would be easier to create a #XMPP gateway to #Matrix _and_ a Matrix client than it is to just create a client for XMPP...

In today's #xmpp client dev adventures: I can't see my own messages once they're sent. I know I still have to finish wiring up local echo, the on-device archive, and later down the line MAM too. But shouldn't it still be echoed to me, so that I know the server received it?

@ribalinux just #VanillaOS but made by someone else. In fact, they did attempt to use Vanilla OS tools in their system.

I'm trying to read the #Forgejo commit history to see what is actually being done on Forgejo itself. It doesn't look like they're doing anything other than rebranding, and the commits all seem repetitive and things that have already been done.Everyone I talk to about self hosted Git is only aware of #Gitea, and there's not much of a practical reason to switch, if Gitea is already working well for you.I guess the question is: who added Actions first?

       I just learned #Amsterdam has its own official closed-registration #Mastodon server, https://social.amsterdam.nl. (I already knew about https://social.bund.de and https://social.network.europa.eu.)That's pretty neat!cc @notjustbikes

Additionally, I like how all of these services used "social" instead of "mastodon" in their names. Primarily, that enables them to legally switch software to something like *key, *oma, or a Mastodon fork like Glitch or Hometown.

For the sake of curiosity, I'm looking into SimpleX Chat's architecture, to answer the question: could I run a fully independent SimpleX Chat stack, ideally that is still compatible with the "official" stack?#SimpleX #SimpleXChatA thread at https://phanpy.social/#/fosstodon.org/s/110289475999173808?view=full 🧵

The official SMP server, which seems to be SimpleX's relay and afaik is the only one it works with right now, is written in Haskell, which nothing wrong about it, I just don't know a lick of it.

Maybe it's me being too young to understand #IRC, can someone help me out here?* People tend to lump it in the same "federated" box as the Fediverse or XMPP/Matrix, even though to my knowledge, it isn't really federated at all?* On public servers, you have to periodically message Nickserv to stay signed in with a nickname. It's pretty annoying. Can I use a client certificate for that? How do I do that?* My IP is public when I'm in a room, most of the time. That's kinda uncomfortable.

Even though the shift is small, it's big enough. It's incredible watching the Fediverse grow; first with the Birdsite flocking to #Mastodon, and now with #Lemmy and #Kbin growing in popularity (I only recently learned about Kbin)... this type of growth is enough to kickstart more people coming over here.I'm looking forward to #Tumblr maybe joining sometime soon (oh, the memes you can see!), maybe some prominent Twitch people will try out #Owncast, maybe I can get some of my family over here...

I really think #Kbin and #Pixelfed will and should work really well together. For the memes. and I mean that!Imagine following a meme subreddit -- directly! -- from your Instagram account, or an Instagram meme page -- directly! -- from Reddit, and not by a reposter account. Now with the Fediverse (and the #Threadiverse), this is reality.Long live the Fediverse, and long live the Threadiverse!

I'm starting to think we need a new search engine. New indexes, semi-manually built from scratch, topical, semantically aware, anti-clickbait, all that. First class support for Fedi sites that allow it, wikis, and forums would be the main targets; although other things could be added too.

I've seen countless people I've followed move from #Fosstodon to other servers over the past few days. I can't quite figure out why people are so disillusioned with it; I'd guess it's the RMS style extremists but I haven't actually seen any of them...

I got some Onn brand walkie talkies intending to use them in the mountains (which we did!). I'm learning all about how they work, including the privacy codes. Now I'm falling down the rabbit hole of #FRS (low power walkies like the ones I have) and #GMRS, and #CB and #HamRadio are on my radar now...

You know, I'd like to help fundraise for a #Mastodon / #Pixelfed / #Fediverse ad campaign. TV ads, radio ads, Twitter and Instagram ads (although good luck with that, and also yikes), a Times Square jumbotron, anywhere that will get people talking and help spark some word-of-mouth. Bring people to the light side :)

Could we set up a non-authenticated, turbo mesh Bluetooth (or WiFi?) network system (named channels? presets?) that works as a modern take on walkie-talkies? It's got to be fast to switch on, fast to transmit, and fast to receive.
