I got some Onn brand walkie talkies intending to use them in the mountains (which we did!). I'm learning all about how they work, including the privacy codes. Now I'm falling down the rabbit hole of #FRS (low power walkies like the ones I have) and #GMRS, and #CB and #HamRadio are on my radar now...

Some notes about my walkies' "privacy codes":* They're not private at all. It sounds like a password, but if you use code 0 (off), you hear EVERYTHING.* It's variously called, in the packaging and manual, as privacy codes, interference blocking codes, and sub codes. The second is a mouthful, but most apt, and the first is highly misleading.* It uses two schemes: CTCSS (one low frequency tone) and DCS (low freq digital octal), and it switches at 39.https://www.k0tfu.org/reference/frs-gmrs-privacy-codes-demystified.html

I've come up with a design for a handheld multi-purpose radio that would also be programmable and, if you've been issued a call sign, can transmit on licensed frequencies like GMRS and amateur radio (you'd only be able to get the transmitting program if you prove your license).Among other things, it would have a phone like keypad, a power-indicating LED (green = receiving, yellow = medium power use, red = high power use, like when transmitting at over 0.5 watts), and an e-ink display.

I'm considering getting a GMRS radio although I don't know what use I'd have for it. It's just a souped up version of what I can use for free, and the souped up aspect probably isn't very helpful, to be honest.Although getting the license is $35 and that's it. I could get a GMRS radio too, and it would work with the walkies I have now...

If I got a #GMRS call sign, does that work with #HamRadio as well?

@blake nope, no overlap. GMRS is good for the no test 'family license'. Otherwise, just test for the ham technician license and you'll get a lot farther reach. Repeaterbook.com
