@kev Thanks for the account - all the good, the bad and the ugly - and how it turned out. It is definitely a situation that would be hard for almost anyone to handle without forethought and maybe even planning. You've been careful to help anyone else traumatized - you've also been traumatized and I hope you'll take care of yourself as well, and let yourself be comforted.

@brandon Bind also does dynamic DNS (updates), and this can be secured with a "secret" so that only authorized clients can send updates.I don't think I have that currently set up though.

@fatboy What's "adult" about paying with cash? I know it's not ... sexy/popular ... but I'm not sure why it is associated with "being adult".

@urusan Buildbot is ok, but you configure it by writing/adapting a python program.I haven't found a good solution for automatically downloading/building releases that are done by tarball. It's great for software that is available by git/other repos though.

@urusan (Trying out a new mastodon client for the first time, hopefully won't have any glitches.) Yes, but you have to keep changing the name or URL of the file to download. I haven't run across a project yet where that is predictable and therefore easily automatable. I have to admit, I haven't looked very hard. I'm adding projects in sw repos for now.

@kev @redeagle I interpreted what @redeagle said as "the tax regulations are vague and undeciperable", not "I pay too much taxes".I also laud @redeagle for actually understanding how to come to the bottom line (taxes owed) and not just accepting the output of an opaque program. In Canada I expect it's not as opaque, but it's getting more and more opaque. When I started doing taxes, it was a bit complicated, then got simpler, but now getting more complicated again (as the years go by).

@getimiskon @metalune I hate to tell you this, but the internet is not just the world wide web (http).Having the www. means you can put the web server on a different host if you want to (without messing about with PAT).

Am I the only person who thinks that electric cars might not be the best use of centrally generated electricity, if the batteries lose 40-60% of their power just by being outdoors in the cold weather?Maybe we should work harder on other alternatives to oil and gas?

@kev I agree the huge amount of these metals is another large problem for using batteries at scale in transport. But, all the people saying batteries in transport is so much better than gas - but some electric plants still use oil/gas to operate - and now we are throwing away 40-60% of that generated energy in cold weather. Not to mention the inefficiency of storing energy in batteries even at room temperature. Not saying we don't need to get off oil and gas ... but ...

@urusan Not only do I wear a ring on my ring finger - every month I switch hands. I'm not going to get a ring stuck on my hand if my knuckles swell up as I get older.and I get a chuckle out of the shock and confusion of people who expect the ring to mean something related to my marital status and/or availability for relationships.I bought this ring for myself when I was a kid.

I've added a request in the letsencrypt community for the diff to be provided in plain-text and failing that in pdf format.https://community.letsencrypt.org/t/subscriber-agreement-1-3-sept-2022-and-diff-from-1-2/185504Argh they are claiming docx is "open" and are openly trolling another person that brought it up on another thread, presumably when the draft agreement was being developed.

@Nonilex This is why we should discourage governments from sharing info between departments.Any info collection should be limited to the minimum that is needed for program delivery and purged as soon as possible after delivery is accomplished.I'm currently looking at you, "revenue canada checkbox for add-me-to-electoral-list-checkbox", but this applies to all government data collection.
