       @futurebird I bet some of the joints disassemble for easier relocation.

       @justafrog @futurebird a) looks like an an ancient crab ancestor got stuck halfway through a moult, decided to just go with it, and then kept repeating the same mistake.

       @futurebird We got some of those tubular black solar-powered lawn lights on sale at Lowes. I did not realize that they were A) almost entirely hollow, and B) open ln near the baseNeedless to say, they are nice and toasty during daylight and were quickly colonized by local sugar ants. I left them alone after I found them while trying to replace one of the batteries; as long as they're not coming inside nobody minds them.So if folks can't grow ant plants, I recommend tubular lawn lights!

       @futurebird I would argue that the"weirdest thing" in the universe exists elsewhere, because there is so _much_ elsewhere and we are still finding objectively weird new stuff in disciplines we consider mature and well-understood here on Earth.But I fear that we will not realize its weirdness because it will be so alien that we won't understand its true nature until long after whatever it is has been dismissed, or destroyed.

       @futurebird Not familiar, but I found one semi-academic article that states some Atta species can excrete antibiotic saliva, and even tune the concentrations to deal with different variations of common fungal threats.I'd assume that they can also prevent their fertilized eggs from being consumed via the same mechanism, although it seems like this aspect of their life cycle has not been the subject of very much research.

       @futurebird You might enjoy "Camelot 30K"; it's not precisely this setup, but some similarities.

       @futurebird I'm sad that I didn't have time to put my head in a tree while we were there recently, although we found a number of delightful parks.I kept my eyes peeled for ants but mostly saw an array of birds and the odd squirrel.I feel a little bad that the only actual insects I saw up close were a couple of disoriented roaches that apparently mistook our bathroom for the new restaurant downstairs -_-;

       @futurebird @petergleick Something I've been cogitating on is that conservative talking points seem to indicate that conservatives are incapable of mentally modeling systems. They can't conceive of anything past first-order effects.To them, the point of vaccination is to stop the vaccinated person from getting sick, full stop. The idea of a network of vaccination preventing the spread of a disease simply cannot be conceived. Anything else is a total failure. Or at least, so they say.

       @futurebird That is a very cool model, but how am I learning from _Etsy_ that there are _jumping_ ants... and in fact, multiple genera??

       @tomjennings @JustaJason007 @Kierkegaanks @Alice Nobody wants to go into the trades these days. Who will be the gruff-but-misunderstood old gray hair who teaches kids the lesson about kindness and being prepared against occult threats in 2035 long-form TikToks, if not our generation?No, people these days want to be "cared for" in their "comfortable old age", not contribute meaningfully to society by frightening youngsters and letting their house fall gracefully into decay!

       @futurebird @apLundell I got a hard enough time keeping food in my face with two lips, 27 teeth*, and a tongue; how am I going to catch all the cookie crumbs with my grinding surfaces _outside_ of my face?(*Mistakes have been made)

       @futurebird Cities should have changed codes following the Grenfell Tower fire, but that was only 8 years ago, not even long enough for the first lawsuits to reach court apparently -_-;

       @futurebird Ironically, this problem only exists because each of us owns the means of "production".
