       It seems like the fire was caused by bamboo scaffolding for renovations on the old apartments. 86 people died including a firefighter named Ho Wai-ho. Death toll is not final. Horrible tragedy.Many elderly people lived in these apartments. I expect HK to make changes to their building codes and other large cities should pay attention. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzMkmcVavGg

       These buildings are VERY similar to co-op city. I don't buy that "bamboo scaffolding" is the whole story. That so many buildings caught fire at once is horrible. How did it spread to so many floors?The elderly population would make evacuation harder, but still. This needs to be investigated, and every big city should pay attention.

       @futurebird and the fire alarms didn’t work either. I heard there was insulation that was styrofoam or something, and highly flammable as well. It’s so awful. Reminded me of the Grenfell fire. Too many lax codes or poor enforcement and no support for tenants in order to help developers and landlords profit. It’s criminal. Murderous. And they should be charged with extreme negligence. So many people without homes now.

       @futurebird Cities should have changed codes following the Grenfell Tower fire, but that was only 8 years ago, not even long enough for the first lawsuits to reach court apparently -_-;

       @futurebird What I've seen is that the buildings had been renovated with exterior cladding which did not meet code. (Rather like Grenfell.)Foam insulation is really not any kind of good idea, but it's cheap and it's easy.

       @futurebird What about sprinkler and other fire suppression systems?

       @futurebirdWhen updating urban fire codes, make sure not to block clever new techniques for tall wooden buildings (well, maybe not New York tall...yet?)It is time to build our cities from carbon storing wood rather than carbon emitting concrete.https://www.ubm-development.com/magazin/en/sara-kulturhus-sweden/https://lendager.com/project/trae/
