there should be a twitch-style site that lets you stream VHS tapes. VHS tapes should be legal to stream over the internet. the DMCA can't apply, they're not digital!

WHY CAN'T WE ROUTE ANALOG NTSC SIGNALS OVER THE INTERNET?

@foone well as long as they don't get digitized before they're streamed! or any VHS capture uploaded on youtube would be legal (which would be nice honestly)

@foone This is a really good point. There should be a protocol for this...if some esoteric one doesn't already exist.

@foone back in the day, we used to have this for music at MIT:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Library_Access_to_Music_Project(possibly you already knew about this)

@foone a friend of a vlogger i've watched forever would show a few tapes every morning on an alt channel (i think it was called "golden VCR") and he might still be doing it, i don't actually know. i kinda subbed without question because of long-term recognition and hadn't actually looked at any of his streams to notice he had these redeems for generating heinous AI art in a semi-transparent overlay and i don't fuck with that so i had to bounce.

@foone can’t wait for the DSD file format of NTSC, a single minute of broadcast will take terabytes to store!

@foone now I'm curious whether analog Macrovision counts as a technical protection measure

@Rib it doesn't matter! DMCA only applies to digital content, and VHS is analog.

@alilly not if we don't sample it. I want to route analog signals over the internet, not digitization

@foone There was an on-demand video “streaming” service available in…I think Hong Kong…in the 90’s. You selected what you wanted to watch from a set-top box and then a tape robot physically put a DVD in a player at HQ whose output was then routed to a specific cable channel reserved for you. If they ran out of DVD players at HQ you had to wait, but they avoided copyright/streaming/storage/bandwidth issues this way.

@foone @Rib but once divided to the stream, wouldn't that count as digital content?Anyhow, I guess there is more than DMCA for copyright

@foone Alas the best I can do is video over ATM. I know there used to be some sort of PAL to ATM uber expensive box. But they were phased out before my time in the MCR. https://www.cse.wustl.edu/~jain/cis788-97/ftp/video_over_atm.pdf

@foone @alilly Yes! Yes! Why are we screwing around with binary when we can represent the entire 32-bit Unicode range by an analog voltage that ranges between +/- 2147.48365 volts? (Code points are delineated by microvolts.)

@foone If you dial speed down it should be possible to encode individual luminance and chroma readouts as time intervals between packets (just trigger primitive FPGA MAC realization by voltage-to time converter).Whether subsequent packet synchronization on the switch side is digitization is up to discussion. And you need a very long delay line to get playback to normal speed again.

@foone we just need to rebuild the Long Lines network, that carried ntsc analog video over microwave
