@nuthatch @jwisser @schwa replying to a post and then boosting the reply has been put forward as a saner means of quote posting.Better than turning text into an image with a screenshot. More courtesy, in that the reply stays under, as distinct from birdsite convention of top posting, in which the repost says it's more important by being on top. I'm not for or against the idea, too new around here, just sharing something that seems on topic.

@cellio @tchambers that's a seriously important thread. After you've soaked up the appetizers for _why_ these things need to be thought about, here's her guide for people thinking about running a Mastodon server\*:https://denise.dreamwidth.org/91757.html\* Actually not Mastodon specific. The same concerns apply for any service under a domain you control that accepts content from other people.

@cellio @tchambers it's a long read. Start with "End notes" to prioritize or weight what you pay attention to.

@hackaday lack of home pages. I'm nostalgic for the time when signing up with an ISP got you a) internet access, b) an email account, and c) a website all in one go.

@dave omg I miss this: "...integration of browsing with editing. When you see something that needs to be changed, you're already in the browser." We were ***SO*** close to this being real. 20 years ago. And then the world moved away. I don't understand why we moved away then. I don't understand why it's not a target now.

@simon a worthy thought experiment. I'm also interested in a converse question: what if all the truly valuable info was off limits (e.g. peer reviewed science, literature, spiritual tomes of ancients, encyclopædia, ...) and all that Data was allowed to ingest was society's dreck (pornhub, lose weight fast for only $20/month, pulp fiction, ...) ?

@simon there's some interesting thoughts 🧐. Feed a series of AI only material from given ages - Greeks, Romans, Norse, Renaissance - and see what comes out. Ditto for cultures.

@dave Text casting: I'm totally behind every idea on that page. I hope it catches fire (in a good way!). One thing missing from my personal POV: images. I like to sprinkle one or two in my words. Lightly, tastefully, like spice, floated to one side or the other. It's a mystery to me why there's such a persistent decades long schism between the simple text cultures, who I largely identify with, and the rich text and graphics ones that generate icky tag soup under the covers.

@dave "Fish kills like this are common in the summer when temperatures increase."...and what does 'common' mean please? Once a year? 5 times a year? Every 4th year?

@tchambers @darius Meta, Google, etc. are enormous. Whatever they direct their attention to, and away from, will change. There's no getting around that.I'm silent on whether advance de-federation of Meta is good/bad. I just don't know enough.Email is a federated open protocol. It's alive for the independent operator, but only so long as they don't want to interact with the big boys. So that's a mark in the successful EEE column.Html5 and CSS is a mark for openness though. @tchambers @darius...Html5 and CSS is a mark for openness. I remember the incredible lengths we had to go through to make a web page work with all platforms and their individual attempts to EEE.That success came because of strong efforts from places like Mozilla Foundation and web dev communities like A List Apart to make NOT being spec compliant embarrassing for Microsoft. The lesson here, to my mind, for what's needed for success is a coherent public message.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_Standards_Project

@tchambers @darius One of the related projects to the web standards effort that I personally think was integral to the larger eventual success was CSS Zen Garden. A public and engaging show case for what is possible with the standard. A flexible framework that anybody could pick up and publish their flavour of beauty and coolness for us to wow at and learn from.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/CSS_Zen_GardenI don't know what the equivalent Activity Pub garden might be, but we should look for it.
