I've been thinking about this article in the nyt https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/27/magazine/insect-apocalypse.html all day, it collects together a lot of stories I've seen of environmental collapse, and just the denuding of the world of life, with lots of scary statistics. But I think the saddest part is this:"The number of Sophie the Giraffe toys sold in France in a single year is nine times the number of all the giraffes that still live in Africa."

LB: Like >15 years ago I took a genetics course in uni and I think it was a wonderful experience. This was right when the results of the human genome project were being published and the cost of sequencing was dropping like a stone. Our textbooks were full of nice, simple, narratives about how this all worked and in class the profs had to be all "actually, no".One big one was just how many genes humans have, my textbook said >100k and this had to be radically revised down to ~20k

I have a series of meetings to go to on whether or not we've been using our engineering stamps appropriately. Not that we're running around stamping little beavers on things willy nilly, but that we aren't doing this. Sort of.We're under the (probably) mistaken belief that because our engineering work is only used internally and doesn't really have a public/worker safety dimension then it doesn't need to be stamped....

My favourite thing about living in a winter city is how even though it snowed all weekend and nothing was done about it, come Monday morning we're all shocked -- shocked! -- that the roads are terrible and nobody can get anywhere.

My take on the proliferation of celebratory events described here https://www.theatlantic.com/family/archive/2018/11/gender-reveal-parties-life-events/577075/Is that these are parties for people who otherwise don't have anything fun in their lives.Of the people I know, those with interesting and fulfilling lives do not do these. These are the last scraps of joy for those trapped in a hollow suburban desperation.

These guys look like they're having fun. I don't know if I should be happy or sad that I can go to work now.

The wildfires in California have really driven air pollution into the forefront of public consciousness like we haven't seen in decades. Leading to style section articles like this one that wouldn't be out of place in The Sheep Look Up.https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/30/style/air-quality-pollution-monitors.html

Driving on a desolate secondary highway at night, listening to nothing but road sounds, is always a strange and hypnagogic experience.I'm always somewhat disappointed that I arrive back in continuous space and linear time. As if, for a moment, this wasn't a given.

Google to ban political ads ahead of federal election, citing new transparency ruleshttps://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-google-to-ban-political-ads-ahead-of-federal-election-citing-new/Is this actually...bad? I mean maybe a world with less political advertising would be good?

The sad thing about this chart is that, relative to people I know, I am not particularly left wing.https://votecompass.cbc.ca/alberta/

I went to public school and this was mostly what I was taught in schoolhttps://www.dailyxtra.com/two-catholic-school-graduates-fact-check-their-sex-ed-textbook-fully-alive-148915I especially remember being told that I wasn't gay, that it was all just a phase, and I would grow out of my let's-never-mention-them-explicitly feelings.

This report I'm reading has the greatest title "Optimization of plumbosolvency control using computational modeling techniques"Plumbosolvency is such a delightfully old fashioned sounding term for dissolved lead in your drinking water.

I have long advocated for scrapping parental leave and replacing it with a general sabbatical. Now I have a link to send people to that supports my ravingshttps://qz.com/work/1662928/the-case-for-giving-paid-leave-to-all-employees-for-any-reason/
