I've been thinking about this article in the nyt https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/27/magazine/insect-apocalypse.html all day, it collects together a lot of stories I've seen of environmental collapse, and just the denuding of the world of life, with lots of scary statistics. But I think the saddest part is this:"The number of Sophie the Giraffe toys sold in France in a single year is nine times the number of all the giraffes that still live in Africa."

I remember being a zoo somewhere and there a little plaque about some endangered something that mentioned they sold more stuffed versions of it than existed in the wild. This is the world we're leaving behind. One depopulated of life that does not directly serve us.

@allan I think the fact that zoos exist at all is harrowing and weird.

@kai I think when they crossed from being a weird Victorian menagerie to being a necessary and vital part of conservation was the sign that things had gone horribly wrong.
