The "you have to pay to view content, because AI companies are scraping us" line we're seeing from social media sites like Twitter and Reddit is just a convenient excuse. This is simply decades-old unsustainable funding models and dried up venture capital runway finally coming home to roost. Plain and simple.

@mmasnick @Gargron "XMPP did not exist on its own outside of nerd circles" is the funniest thing I've read today.

@Gargron @mmasnick oh no I agree, it’s funny because it’s absolutely true… yet people these days romanticize how popular it was a lot.

Is something broken on .social? I just started seeing posts from people I do not follow in my Home feed. Have made sure they're not boosts/replies. [Update: I'd accidentally followed a hashtag, false alarm!]

@Gargron Not that I remember... where do I even go in the web interface to find that?

@Gargron Oh weird, I was somehow following #twittermigration but don't remember ever clicking that. Fixed now.

@ariadne Is there literally *any* decent domain registrar though? I have struggled to find one.

Is there an easy way to check how "defederated" the .social instance is?

Personally not a fan of the @username@instance.tld format that the fediverse uses... especially the @ at the beginning, which is entirely redundant.Much prefer the simple instance.tld/@username format.

@Gargron I’ve thought a bit on this… I think it’s that lack of consistency in how it’s used across the app that has made me dislike the @ up front. See 3 examples below of user handles being displayed in different ways. Your reply from same instance, a reply from external instance, and the reply authoring screen (where the @ is omitted) I think the key to adoption of this format is presenting it consistently as @username@instance.tld everywhere.

What's the most lightweight / low resource single-user instance ActivityPub/Mastodon implementation?

Wishing I'd come up with the term "grift shift" https://www.institutionalinvestor.com/article/2c4fad0w6irk838pca3gg/portfolio/money-is-pouring-into-ai-skeptics-say-its-a-grift-shift

Somebody should create a virtual/software version of the Tascam Porta One you can run on an iPad or in a VST host. I suspect a lot of people would buy it.

Dropbox enabling this by default = not cool. Guess I need to finally set up Syncthing or similar and do it all myself.

@Ailuridae I just don't like the idea of my private/personal files being sent plain and unencrypted in any shape or form to a third-party. It's a security and privacy issue waiting to explode a few years from now. Watch them say "oh we accidentally had logging enabled" 12 months from now or something.

Just shutdown https://feditrends.com because it was getting close to zero traffic. If you want essentially the same feed of stuff (just more of a firehose), here is a Google Sheet with the most recently trending domains and associated RSS feeds: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1fNDz6yqcsSxwBJazuaQvc6dF2c6l8LWwct-6h_7BEV4/edit?usp=sharingThanks for everyone who encouraged my building of the site originally, I hope some people got some value out of it.

@Bernard It was fun to build and I rearchitected it a few months back to run locally on a Raspberry Pi with Cloudflare in front of it, which was a nice learning experience. Just didn't want to keep putting any energy or electricity into something nobody is using though. :)
