@kravietz @maniamakash And even worse, some people (hardly professional analysts and journalists though) use the adjective “Soviet” when referring to the Communist era in countries like the former Yugoslavia. Which as far as I know is unhistorical in two senses. Especially Yugoslavia was not that close to the Soviet Union, and the path to Communist dictatorships outside the USSR did not necessarily involve soviets (“councils”), did it? Or am I wrong?

@suihkulokki @jon In theory some other company could do it, too? But will the single other company with rolling stock (old VR regional trains) have it renovated in time, and would they want to, given that their plan so far has been in the other end of the country?

@nicd Already the caption shows the attitude of the paper: "street". That is a pavement.Maybe they mean that if there wasn't for the ad stands, there would be space for more cars to stop/park on the pavement?

@stfn @pandora Well, far from all (more or less) Christian countries adopted it in 1582. As that very Wikipedia article lists.

@kaia I am certainly no fan of Elon Musk, and don't like cars in general, but still. This seems to be a misunderstanding or intentionally misleading, though. The picture is of a "wrap" for the Cybertruck, intentionally made to look like that. Not related to the magnet incident. See https://www.reddit.com/r/RealTesla/comments/1gvzecu/tesla_cybertruck_becomes_extensively_corroded/

Please, mutuals, watch out for fake news and misinformation also from our good side.I am sure many of you saw toots claiming that Fox News removed the stock ticker from their broadcast once it was obvious how the markets were reacting to Trump's tariffs.Well, turns out, that is misinformation. The markets were closed at that time, and Fox News does not show a continuous stock ticker anyway even while markets are open. I assume one can trust snopes.com.https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/fox-news-remove-stocks-ticker-trump-tariffs/

"U.S. to place 3,251% tariffs on Southeast Asian solar panels"Yep, you read that right. That is not a decimal comma but a thousands separator. Is this the highest tariff ever placed by a supposedly normal country on some imports? And why such an oddly specific number? To make it look more scientific? Is this again the result of some "very complicated" mathematical formula? Why doesn't Trump simply ban such import instead? Because a president can't do that, they can only impose tariffs?

@FSonder "Launch from anywhere"? The latitude of the launch site determines what orbit inclination can be achieved, and that again greatly affects the amount of fuel needed to launch into a suitable trajectory to reach the Moon (not to mention another planet). These are not just small technical details but profound parameters that affect a complete mission profile. But I am not a rocket scientist.

@foone LibreOffice Calc is a direct descendant of StarOffice’s StarCalc. From 1985. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/StarOfficeOh, but because it is open source nowadays the age of its core technology doesn’t matter, shouldn’t be used against it? To some degree, I can accept that, sure.

@foone @gentarkin Have you actually looked into LibreOffice source code? It is full of artefacts from StarOffice times. Things called SO something etc. The main executable is still called soffice(.exe), for chrissake. But tons of things have been very much cleaned up and rewritten, of course.

@pony My guess: The tram line is much newer than the bridge, and had to be shoehorned into the space that is left after keeping the sidewalks, perhaps adding a cycle path, and reducing the street width to one lane?

@pony The tram lines in Itä–Pasila have changed at lot over the years, and the city's overall intent is to make public transport *better*. There is no conspiracy to make it harder for trams. On the contrary, it is the car lobby that complains about alleged policy to make it harder for cars, and public transport and cycling infrastructure being favoured. Here, they had to make do with the existing non-movable bridge support.

@pony The footbridge is where people walk across the street, if they come from the large houses on one side and are going to some shop or the library on the other side. Would it really be better if they had to go down stairs to the street level, cross the street, and up again to the semi-pedestrianised upper level?(Can't say how well the pedestrianisation actually works in those parts, it might be that various cars providing "important services" keep driving there all the day anyway.)

@pony By the way, that footbridge used to end with a circular ramp for cyclists or others that couldn't use stairs. Orthophoto from 1998 from https://kartta.hel.fi , in the next one from 2001 the circular ramp is gone.
