       @mkarliner @lauren the balloon the "volume" of three buses makes much more sense than "payload."Weather balloons expand tremendously as their altitude increases.However, a payload volume of "three buses" must have very little mass. A balloon just can't carry very much weight.

       @lauren @mkarliner many size comparisons are irrational. Lol. I read the Yahoo article you linked. It has some vagueness, but it implies that we know the payload is transmitting RF. I suppose that's probably pretty easy to determine, but I'd like a little more validation than "we heard it transmits RF." I'm cynical that the Chinese want to spy on us with a balloon, or that it's any more of a risk, when they have so many other options that we ignore like satellites and American citizens.

       @lauren as I recall, I believe it was a book called "The straight dope" where I read it was short for old kinderhook or something like that. If you haven't read the straight dope, you are not one of the teeming masses. Lol

       @lauren  I knew the origins of the books. The column wasn't in my local papers though. I just recall reading about the origin of ok in one of the series of books.

       @lauren I think China as a government is collecting the same data, maybe more, as US marketers. The difference to be is it's a government. An organization which has the ability to kidnap, detain, or kill me anywhere in the world. Am I going to be a target? No, probably not. But what if you post something about hating China, then 5 years later you visit China or Hong Kong? You might be disappeared.
