TikTok Hysteria: By the way, since I'm asked about this so much, I'll just say this briefly here. I think that 99% of the hysteria about TikTok, including from both political parties, DOD, state governments, Biden, Trump, and all the rest of them (including in other Western countries), isnonsense.I think the new "sell TikTok to an American firm" demands are indeed just a quick way to try get such valuable assets into the U.S. coffer. As with the somewhat similar hysterical about China's DJI, I don't believe that China has resorted to using these obvious and inspectableplatforms for surveillance and espionage. They have plenty of other means. As does the West. The data leakage stories I've seen about TikTok so far are essentially on par with the kinds of sloppy (not nefarious) behavior that we seem to hear about from U.S. firms almost every day. There are plenty of reasons to be wary of China. I don't feel that TikTok is one of them. -L

@lauren TikTok is engaged in abusive practices, but rivals like Facebook/Instagram and others are engaged in some of the same practices, and data brokers will happily sell the Chinese government (indirectly, perhaps through a shell corporation) vast troves of information on American citizens. If the government wants to crack down any new rules should apply equally regardless of where the owners are based.

@lauren I think China as a government is collecting the same data, maybe more, as US marketers. The difference to be is it's a government. An organization which has the ability to kidnap, detain, or kill me anywhere in the world. Am I going to be a target? No, probably not. But what if you post something about hating China, then 5 years later you visit China or Hong Kong? You might be disappeared.

@tippenring I don't think so. China doesn't want to lose TikTok. They're not stupid. They don't have to do anything nefarious if they just want to monitor people's public postings. And with such a spotlight on TikTok they'd be stupid to do more. And again, they're not stupid.

@lauren @DavidM_yeg And people in our free market system pay to have their DNA analyzed, stored in a database and the information sold to those who will pay. No foreign government needs to develop or use spyware. All they have to do is pay social media providers.
