@adamshostack @JosephMenn "Looking for Russian propaganda and billionaire ego-stroking? Twitter's got it! For everything else, there's Mastodon."

@adam Having worked in a hardware store, I can tell you there were two types. There were people we would see three or four times for the same project, some stupid little thing came up that would have them back in the store every day for a week, and then there were the people we saw once. Not because the project was finished, but because they didn't want to come back in after buying the wrong thing. People get super embarrassed about that stuff and I don't get it. I guess if you're not a maker and live primarily in the corporate world you're not used to the utter stupidity that a project can throw at you when you have nobody to blame but yourself.

@alienghic @mattblaze How is a "quote tweet" different from boosting and then just typing something? People get bent over twitter, not understanding that there were literal government agencies tasked with pissing people off on there. But nah, it's the quote feature that's been a staple of every form of social media since the days of mailing lists and UseNet.

@alienghic @mattblaze If that's the case then the absolute hysteria I see of this shit is beyond fucking stupid. "Hey minions, go attack @somerandomassholethatdoesn'texistandimadeup" Oh no, they totally can't do that without a tweet to get mad about...More platform vs propaganda ignorance, really.

@textfiles Well back in the early 1980's America elected a dementia-addled asshole named Ronald Reagan as President. In accordance with the instructions given to him by the people around him that knew what they were doing he signed legislation that essentially destroyed the mental healthcare and welfare systems in this country. This resulted in an increase in unhoused individuals, many of whom suffer from mental illness. A somewhat simple way to make a few dollars a week when you have difficulty maintaining employment and live on the streets in a state that has a redemption program like New York is to collect bottles and cans from the trash and redeem them. Flippancy aside, why 240 containers? I can't find a solid answer, but given there is an exception for 72 containers I'm going to wager a guess that they tied it to a number of redemptions per hour since there are specific exemptions based on store hours.https://www.nysac.org/files/NYSAC%20Bottle%20Bill%20White%20Paper.pdf

@textfiles I was in NYC a couple of months back and nobody said anything. I guess my dance moves aren't as fire as I thought.

@textfiles This is brilliant. I remember picking up one of these tomes every few months. You got the impression things were moving fast from "normal" PC mags but then you see the same machine advertised for six or eight months, it goes from being the fastest to the slowest, and the price drops 50%. That's when you knew the tipping point had been reached.

@simulo @jbigham Because few people took the anti-PDF camp seriously 25 years ago. There was a big push even back then to avoid PDFs primarily because of the dearth of 3rd party readers. Even after the PDF spec was published and a few became available it was clear there are serious issues with the format. If only we had some kind of markup language that would allow a basic web browser to read data and display it in a specified format. That would allow all sorts of accessibility tools to work on it. Oh well, too bad such a thing doesn't exist and there's no way research documents could be uploaded using that alongside a PDF.

@mstevens86 @chancerydaily The "better lawyering" would have had to have happened years ago, and taken the form of specific instructions to never send a goddamn email when discussing illegal shit.Your local weed dealer has better opsec than Fox.

@benjaminwittes So the Russians sent a force that was too small, got outmaneuvered, were told to fuck off, and immediately retreated to probably declare victory because they were able to block half of the attacks. But enough about their efforts in Ukraine... this umbrella thing was weird.

@fcktheworld587 @f4grx @internetarchive Or maybe it's because they're greedy cunts. But that's too simple of an explanation, one that's backed up by decades of data, and some fucking losers need nine levels of conspiracy before they pay attention to anything.

@mjg59 There’s zero guarantee that the threat is readily replicable. It could be a form of botnet using zombie sessionIDs or spoofed logins or some shit. I’ve already talked to a couple of people that had unknown devices on their accounts. Clearing everything out allows for easier monitoring, especially if you have a home full of Echo shit like my sister and brother in law.

@Cloudguy Always funny how "useless degrees" change depending on the speaker. You know, useless ones like marketing says the CS major. Useless ones like CS, says the marketer. There are no useless degrees, only people that don't know how to apply their knowledge.

Mastodon is not a business, it is software. It doesn’t succeed or fail. It gets used. If you can’t understand this then maybe talking to adults isn’t your thing.
