@PinoBatch @nev Unlisted and follower only posts aren't searched, the drop down box when you make a posts makes it clear those aren't available for discovery. The no-index option in mastodon is about noindex for google bots - it is not federated. The no-index option doesn't do anything either - since that isn't federated every other instance out there or other tools such as friendca, Akoma, calckey, lemmy, kbin et all don't know you don't want to be indexed and your federated posts are indexed.

@gme @nev @PinoBatch Not to mention indexing is great for safety since you can use the index to find patterns of abuse and address them before a human has to see them. Not having search means people have to experience abuse and report it before it is acted upon. With that said, in 7 months of search - we've discovered no local abuse but we see patterns of fraud, abuse and spamming elsewhere that we actively report with other admins so we can help ensure that fruand/spam doesn't take over. It's too bad we don't have discussions on this stuff only - they degrade quickly into things that aren't very true.activitypub is a public protocol and each feditool tries to implement its own privacy and none have ever encoded or enshrined search policies yet - but we're actively working with FEP to make that happen.

@NickGates Well, they survived some weird governments back then too. The Jim Crow erra, MccCarthyism... Ronald reagon (that was my parents trump of the time...)George bushhey, i'm not saying its perfect in any sense of the word - but we've all faced challenges and there will alwas be challenges - but we have had some victories.I think we need to "Seal them" - encodify them in law - so the supreme court can't remove them for being merely "prior supreme court findings"and yeah, it stucks we have to do this - but - it's what we do isn't it?

@AdditionalQuench @NickGates Nah, We used to practice getting under our desks to die from Nuke wars though.Believe me, I'd rather take action - and we've proven we can. Before climate change really morphed into something specific - we did have the Ozone problem that was nearly catastrophic, but we did change there too.So i hope we can keep our heads up and change again.Oh, and LA smog - remember the 70s and 80s? It's a slower process than i wished. California holding it down to ensure car/emissions levels to never go back (but oddly some people wanting too)

@AdditionalQuench @NickGates You should have seen the water before the EPA and before we had laws about disposal. It does suck micro plastics are ruining things and ditto with Mercury. If we stopped using the coal fired power plants in the Ohio belt then almost all east coast and gulf coast fisheries would be food safe again within our lifetime. We should be targeted and tactical like thatBut.. there was a point people just died and got sick and that was the cost of living before we had laws and agencies to protect it.

I will be re-imaging this, but I still look back on this fondly as this was one of the faintest supernova remnants I ever imaged from my backyard in Bortle 6/7 skies. Abel 85So many stars!!!#supernova #astrophotography

@Dseitz @misc No one has interest in propping up Meta stock value, but interest in the open web and activitypub is certainly there. Bye Bye walled gardens I say.

@tim i find it weird. Went and read your profile - seem like a nice guy. Don’t know what i did to make ya hate me. I worked SRE, work at red hat right now. What happened the past few months with the meta and anti feature mastodon people is unbecoming of it all. first time we’ve talked and i find it odd to be judged already because of what others have said about me that isn’t true.

The hardest thing about being a mastodon admin isn't the moderation, running servers, paying bills, dealing with users or anything like that. It's dealing with other admins. There is a very thin camaraderie that is easily pierced not because of people being bad, but because of differences of opinions. Those opinions don't get talked about - they create tribes of people who champion them without rational discourse. Say something they don't want to hear and *boom* the tribe attacks and those who may have other perspectives let it happen without saying anything because who wants to face ridicule? This lack of rationality is systemic and problematic - so much so that talking about things in safe spaces is no longer safe. There are no safe spaces.I'm sorry, we need to do better. We need to realize we have differing perspectives but common goals and that doesn't make each other bad or enemies.Advocating for user agency is not a crime.

@benny @moxfulder Admins have conversations about big picture things. It's ok to discuss big "fediverse" things beyond the context of our local instances - see a problem, fix it kind of thing. There is a big picture problem of the HOA vibe on mastodon and a lack of user agency when their default post goes to local.I don't have a problem with local chat. I want it to survive in some fashion - maybe as "local only" or better yet as some kind of group. A group that can be moderated independent of a user's agency to their own timeline. This HOA vibe is cited as a reason why people are leaving the fediverse in general. It's not a problem i face on my local instance per se because i don't moderate the local chat to a specific vibe. But i still don't want people to leave the fediverse because other admins essentially wield power over people's agency.Being open source doesn't fix our HOA vibe. Changing inherent designs in the platform that powers a chunk of fedi could

@benny @moxfulder and guess what - we could change and adapt and have everyone be happy.I have made no such suggestion to harm or change what others like, merely to address a problem that is inherent in the design we have now.One can have a local community and still give users agency and the real problem is attacking me for talking about this obvious problem rather than collaborating to address it.Even Eugen has said he doesn't like the current local and federated timelines - but no one is saying just to yank it out without something to replace it.Yes, if someone on the official discord is talking about user agency - i'll reply we should remove localbut every damn person there knows i follow up with "and replace it with something decoupled from default post type"

@benny @moxfulder I'll say it again. The lack of safe spaces for admins to talk is appalling. Why are people so gung-ho to make it unsafe to even talk about things? talk to people? be open? have questions? participate in open dialogue? Challenge the status quo? Make things better? offer different perspectives? It's toxic.I don't care if we have different opinions I don't care that you run your instance like you see fit.I don't care that you have your own block lists.I don't tell you what to do, how to think or anything... If people challenge me, so be it.The users are fine. The admin culture is moving faster and further into toxicity the longer we do nothing about it.ask me questions, have a dialog, offer me optionsquite sending me hate mail and threats.i'm not asking for much

I will be removing myself from mastodon and transitioning admin to a very capable admin team who has great experience with mastodon and fediverse platform already. My health and wellbeing has been adversely impacted by the events of the past 5 weeks so much so it is impacting my ability to function as a human being.I've started the process with my co-admins and the new admins to work on the next steps. I will keep everyone posted. No changes expected to service/domain or anything like that.Thank you.
