My favorite part of parenthood is watching the visible disintegration of our social, political, and environmental fabric and worrying about how bad it's going to be for my kid when he's my age

@supernovae yeah but our parents and grandparents still expected free elections with a peaceful transfer of power. They didn't expect Canada and Siberia to be on fire. They didn't expect flooding on clear days.

@NickGates Well, they survived some weird governments back then too. The Jim Crow erra, MccCarthyism... Ronald reagon (that was my parents trump of the time...)George bushhey, i'm not saying its perfect in any sense of the word - but we've all faced challenges and there will alwas be challenges - but we have had some victories.I think we need to "Seal them" - encodify them in law - so the supreme court can't remove them for being merely "prior supreme court findings"and yeah, it stucks we have to do this - but - it's what we do isn't it?

@NickGates This is the thing that scares me the most about parenting. You want the best for your kids. But what exactly does that mean when you're raising them in *waves hand*s this.

@mikey It's not *all* bad.yes, it's bleak, yes it's pretty bad. But there are some good things too.@NickGates There has never been a great time to build a kid. Everyone reminiscences about the 'good ol days' but they tend to forget the atrocities.Things are dark, but that is when the palest light shines bright. When you have SCOTUS striking down institutions like Affirmative Action, it doesn't take a whole lot to stand up for what is right.Your son is being allowed to watch his father struggle through "trying times" and come out stronger and more resilient. What an amazing legacy to leave a child!I know it's painful and 'glass half full' but I'm serious. Showing the strength of character of standing up for what you believe in is a far better lesson than *most* of the GQP has ever gotten.

@supernovae @NickGates Was the climate setting record highs almost every year when they said it?

@AdditionalQuench @NickGates Nah, We used to practice getting under our desks to die from Nuke wars though.Believe me, I'd rather take action - and we've proven we can. Before climate change really morphed into something specific - we did have the Ozone problem that was nearly catastrophic, but we did change there too.So i hope we can keep our heads up and change again.Oh, and LA smog - remember the 70s and 80s? It's a slower process than i wished. California holding it down to ensure car/emissions levels to never go back (but oddly some people wanting too)

@mentallyalex @mikey but I'm too tired to protest. I'm neither stronger nor more resilient. I'm just tired.

@NickGates Well yeah - for now. You just built the thing. In a few months when he gets used to life on the "outside" he'll acclimate and you'll suddenly remember what days of the weeks are.We believe in you! :)@mikey

@supernovae @NickGates Glad the threat of nuclear war is over and we traded Cali smog for massive wildfires, ocean garbage & acidification, pfas contamination, and microplastics on every inch of the earth. https://thebulletin.org/doomsday-clock/current-time/

@AdditionalQuench @NickGates You should have seen the water before the EPA and before we had laws about disposal. It does suck micro plastics are ruining things and ditto with Mercury. If we stopped using the coal fired power plants in the Ohio belt then almost all east coast and gulf coast fisheries would be food safe again within our lifetime. We should be targeted and tactical like thatBut.. there was a point people just died and got sick and that was the cost of living before we had laws and agencies to protect it.
