Really though... I want to hear cases for genuine optimism on this actually working. It's one thing to say we have the tools to avoid disaster, but if those tools amount to restoring the status quo ante, what was the point of the whole exercise? I feel like I'm missing something. #threads

I am going to tip my hand here. I want this to work. I am convinced that we can defend ActivityPub against EEE. I think the increase in Meta’s power to surveil us would be marginal. I think we have much to gain. But as far as I can tell, the optimists’ main counter to concerns about harassment campaigns is that retain the option to sever ties at any time. I want to believe this debate isn’t just over whether to block #threads preemptively or mass defederate them almost immediately.

Given the tenor of the debate, I understand the impulse to say “everyone chill, we’ve got this.” But in practice, that’s resulting in a lot of arguments that amount to “it will be like it never happened - assuming it even happens in the first place”. Yes, the worries have been mostly raised by people who want us not to try. But don’t get thrown by that — if you want this to succeed, it’s in your interest to take the worries seriously. #threads

Personally, I think Eugen and other big fedi admins should be meeting with Meta about this now, and making agreements about how to handle this particular issue. Including concrete commitments. Maybe that’s happening and it’s under NDA. 🤷🏻‍♂️ It would be nice to know. #threads

@misc Considering how delusional FB has been re: Threads as a "friendly" "politics free" space I doubt it. My cynical side says that federation will stall once Meta realizes that Eugen etc. have no real interest in propping up their stock price or helping them work with regimes to censor the internet.

@Dseitz @misc No one has interest in propping up Meta stock value, but interest in the open web and activitypub is certainly there. Bye Bye walled gardens I say.
