Give me a Pixel Mini with the Pixel Fold's front display, a single camera, a perpetually last-gen Tensor or 6/7 Gen Snapdragon, and minimum viable storage/RAM/etc. specs for $350. The Pixel has a gap in its current lineup for a free-on-carrier-contract $250-350 device, and I think this would be... Maybe not a blanket "winner" but a way to capture what seems to be a curiously viable market.

I am generalizing, there is a lot more nuance here on both the required specs, partner requirements for carrier-first marketed devices, and the costs involved — guaranteed the LTPO 120Hz front display in the Pixel Fold is way too expensive for a device like this. But I do think that if Google is ready to be a mature Android OEM, it is a gap in the lineup and it could deliver value if done right. After all, Google always did cheap phones better.

@cassidy the new Zenfone 10 I am very excited for. Price is killer, specs look great (except no LTPO), and size is good enough!

@friendlymike I know @MishaalRahman was just talking about the Android sub mods looking for some new digs. Maybe worth a post there.

@MishaalRahman I just discovered this too. Buddy of mine in the EU sent me a photo, I guess it came with a special edition of some kind.

@MishaalRahman yeah, except for the inevitably awful software. I actually soft bricked my OP11 and I can't even care, it's about as good in this state.

@MishaalRahman also fixing a soft bricked 11 is currently not possible — see the "bad software" bit atain.

@futurebird I wrote a short story in college about an old man living in a "smart home" who overrides the safeties to get it to kill him — at first, though easily dodged obvious attempts on his life, but with escalating complexity and obfuscation as each party grows more spry and interested in the game.Until it ends.

@futurebird @bhawthorne if you haven't read There Is No Antimemetics Division by qntm, it's basically a novelization of a bunch of SCP concepts — and it is very, very, very good. Highly recommend!

Remember when children downloading MP3s to just jam out in the pre-streaming era were sued into oblivion? And now AI companies training on vast libraries of pirated, copyrighted data can just do that without repercussions. The law never applies to those with money to evade it.
