@lain @vaartis Have you watched T2? It's got an updated "choose life" rant which I think is even more spot-on. Fun, if depressing at times, sequel tbh.

@progo I run my zfs pool on a pair of disks that are full disk encrypted with luks. All of my VM images are stored in this pool, so I "only" have to enter a passphrase once every reboot. None of those VMs are mission-critical though, so in the unlikely event that a reboot is needed, it can wait until I get home. One of these days I'll probably setup some sort of remote passphrase input, but you know, priorities.

Wireguard stopped working on my VPS for some reason. I can't ssh into it to see what's up because I only exposed ssh on the wireguard interface. Consequently, I also learned that my VPS provider doesn't offer remote console either. So now I have a VPS that does nothing but responds to pings.I'm sad.

@Jain Via plain old ssh of course. I ssh in, setup wireguard, then setup nftables to only allow ssh from the wireguard interface because muh hardening. I assumed all of these things are stable enough so I wouldn't need an escape hatch. Evidently I was wrong...

@lanodan Thanks for the hint! There is a "Rescue Mode" button but it didn't seem to do anything when I tried it - the VPS restarted but I couldn't ssh into it using the provided rescue password either. The VPS's only job is routing traffic to my local server anyway, so I think I'll just switch to another provider that does have remote console. Having to rewrite nftables rules is a bit of a chore, but to look on the bright side it's a relatively low price to pay to learn that my current provider kinda sucks.

@lanodan @Jain My site is now up on another host: https://thac.loan/I also tried reinstalling the previous provider's VM, and I think their recently-deployed "anti ddos firewall" is blocking wireguard somehow. The same wg setup works on my new provider but not this one.

https://ziglang.org/news/migrating-from-github-to-codeberg/>Putting aside GitHub’s relationship with ICE, it’s abundantly clear that the talented folks who used to work on the product have moved on to bigger and better things, with the remaining losers eager to inflict some kind of bloated, buggy JavaScript framework on us in the name of progress.>More importantly, Actions is created by monkeys and completely neglected. Apart from the unnecessary politicsperging, that was sensibly based.

@sicp @w0rm @p Which version of MGS2 do you recommend? Last I checked there were lots and I gave in to analysis paralysis.

@atro Could you elaborate what it means to be "cybernetic"? Is it anything that breaks out of the win95/gnome2 desktop metaphors e.g. your own work (that I assume is) inspired by plan9's rio, or are there more specific qualities to a "cybernetic approach"? I'm genuinely curious.

@CSB @progo It's like deno, as in another nodejs alternative whose selling point is not being nodejs but nodejs-compatible.

@CSB > It’s amazing that they have 3-letter TLD with .com It's pretty common for VC-backed tech companies to buy "premium" domains after all. Bun _was_ VC-backed way before the Anthropic acquisition.> Are there web hosting companies that offer free or cheap hosting of web apps running on bun server side?None that I'm aware of, cheap or not. I think Bun-the-company (or do they still call it Oven?) wants to eventually offer such a service itself, like Deno with Deno Deploy. I'm not sure if this acquisition changes that though. If you really want cheap managed JS runtime, maybe look at Cloudflare Workers? Can't beat the price of free.Disclaimer: I'm a "give me a stock Debian pet VM with SSH and get out of my way" luddite who probably doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to anything as-a-service.

@progo Doesn't sound that bad if your one trick is python :^)Jokes aside, my condolences for having to deal with microsoftware. Only when I started working at a microsoft-centric shop did I realize how bad things really are. MS knows their products just need to barely function and the already-captive customers will have to use them.

@duy @xarvos Using yet another proprietary black-box chat app is not a huge improvement tbh. Signal can still suddenly decide to deny access to your messages and contacts all the same. The only supposed improvement is E2EE, which is neat but only if you trust them to never push an update that compromises it, accidentally or otherwise.IMHO, using non-Vietnamese chat services has one and only one benefit: that the people having access to my data won't be able to, or won't care enough about me to, screw me over (that is until they start selling your data to whoever asks). I can live with that... for now. But don't be fooled into thinking that putting your data onto an untrusted third party is sound opsec. If that's what you want, consider self hosting your chat server with zulip or whatever.

@xarvos @duy I stand corrected, I must have mistaken it with telegram when I said "proprietary black box", sorry!I still stand by my opinion that selfhosting is the better path. With Signal you still need to convince your people to install and use not-zalo anyway, might as well be zulip/mattermost/whatever pointing to your own server.

I wanted to share a funny MGS2 codec parody, ended up on a tangent about lost media. Maybe this is why my tech lead keeps saying my storytelling chops are lacking. Oh well.

I nerdsniped myself into looking for the AI-generated music video mentioned in my own article. What do I know, tuoitre still has it tucked away on the muctim sister site. Funny that their flagship site had to scrub a similar article but this one's still up...https://muctim.tuoitre.vn/kiep-sau-van-la-nguoi-viet-nam-co-lam-sai-lech-van-hoa-lich-su-101250808165855401.htm
