Well shit. My preferred TypeScript/JavaScript stack, Bun, has been acquired by Big Silly-Con Valley AI.https://developers.slashdot.org/story/25/12/03/0437256/anthropic-acquires-bun-in-first-acquisition

@progo there exists sentiment that this shows that Anthropic doesn't actually believe that there won't be engineers in the future, as they are famous for pushing. Otherwise, why do this acqui-hire of Bun?

@IceCubeSoup Did Anthropic project something else? "We'll replace all developers"?

@CSB @progo It's like deno, as in another nodejs alternative whose selling point is not being nodejs but nodejs-compatible.

@CSB @rfgee IIRC Bun starts up faster than node.js, and resolves and installs dependencies a lot faster than npm. It is good.

@CSB @rfgee also I basically skipped node.js when I decided a year or so ago it's time for me to learn TypeScript. Bun's on-boarding-for-noobs documentation is good.

@progoTypescript is easy, it’s used in react , I used it in pastIt’s amazing that they have 3-letter TLD with .com Are there web hosting companies that offer free or cheap hosting of web apps running on bun server side?@rfgee

@CSB > It’s amazing that they have 3-letter TLD with .com It's pretty common for VC-backed tech companies to buy "premium" domains after all. Bun _was_ VC-backed way before the Anthropic acquisition.> Are there web hosting companies that offer free or cheap hosting of web apps running on bun server side?None that I'm aware of, cheap or not. I think Bun-the-company (or do they still call it Oven?) wants to eventually offer such a service itself, like Deno with Deno Deploy. I'm not sure if this acquisition changes that though. If you really want cheap managed JS runtime, maybe look at Cloudflare Workers? Can't beat the price of free.Disclaimer: I'm a "give me a stock Debian pet VM with SSH and get out of my way" luddite who probably doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to anything as-a-service.

@CSB @rfgee I think anyone using Bun on a public rented server is in a "just upload whatever binaries and scripts you wanna run" situation. TornadoVPS-style or Digital Ocean-style container, or VM.

@progo @rfgee Just read what they say! I just preefer native to containers or VM:Render now supports Bun natively, so you can use Bun without Docker.Learn more in our language support docs.https://render.com/docs/language-support

@CSB @rfgee I don't know what the fuck "native" is.Bun ships as a 100MB "batteries included" single binary executable image for all major platforms. You just upload it and use it to execute your JavaScript and TypeScript.Even DreamHost Shared Hosting supports uploading an arbitrary interpreter and a web app as long as it acts as a FastCGI daemon; their Apache server, that you don't configure, can use it.Bun runs on anything and you're not making any verbal sense.

@progo @rfgee Natively must mean something because it’s a word used by them: “Render now supports Bun natively”, probably means container or VM not neededYou probably have little or zero experiences with cloud native Development Otherwise you’d knew

@progo @rfgee nope, you still don’t understand: they deploy differently and it’s about infrastructure providing vertical and horizontal , automatic or manual , scaling. I’m done lecturing you with such attitude: unjustified superiority complex instead of willingness to learn new things . Big corporations demand cloud native for scaling and easiness reasons.

@progo yeah, what I typed is unclear. The idea is that Anthropic has been flogging the idea that developers will be replaced by AI soon. And now they've turned around and dropped big bux to purchase a development team. It's probably the right call, for both Bun and Anthropic. But it just highlights the type of bullshit language that gets tossed around in the marketing hype
