@kev I don’t really see how it’s any more complicated than a static site generator 🤔You can host a GatsbyJS site on Netlify just like a SSG, but instead of writing markdown and pushing to a git repo, you just publish a post on a WordPress site.Or maybe you’re more worried about creating the site itself, more so than the writing/hosting/publishing aspect? I guess that’s similar to creating a theme with Hugo, but maybe a bit more complex? 🤔

@kev yeah I could see that. I’m sure there are some pre-existing themes to work from though

@kev feedbin + netnewswire (for both iOS and Mac) has been a great combo for me; feeds are synced automatically across devices, including read status, etc.Feedbin is the source of truth, so no need to manage anything. Works flawlessly 👌

@gray @kev I came here to recommend Orion as well. It’s been my main driver for the past several months and I really like it :)The Kagi search engine is great too!

@kev glad you got an invite already! I don't have the ability to send one :blobcatgrimacing: I thought everyone had to sign up for the beta program. I think they usually send out invites every 1-2 weeks 🤔 @gray

@kev not without a plugin I think. It should be relatively easy to make one.Getting into block development comes with a bit of a learning curve, but there is a nice little quick start package provided in npm that does most of the work for you 🤔If I ever do make a plugin like that I’ll make sure to ping you first :)

@ru you may find this post by @Seirdy interesting :)https://seirdy.one/2021/03/10/search-engines-with-own-indexes.htmlI have personally been using Kagi for a couple of months and couldn’t be happier. It’s excellent.

@amolith you might like Actual. Recently went open source, self-hosted, and works pretty well. It still has some bugs, but it’s been working really well for me.https://github.com/actualbudget/actual

@amolith I’ve just been exporting stuff from my bank in the Quicken format and importing that into Actual once a week or so. I don’t really need to be 100% up-to-date all the time.If you do find something that works better for you though, I’d be very interested in hearing about it! It’s very hard to find a good personal budgeting application :blobcatdizzy:

@kev @Vollmer you can also keep writing in Markdown with the markdown block if you prefer, so if all else fail you could probably just copy-paste your current posts into WP using the markdown block 🤔

@Vollmer @kev I thought it was in core, but your surprise made me check again; apparently it’s on my site via Jetpack 😅Jetpack isn’t bad if you turn off all the features except the extra blocks, so using it for just the markdown is probably fine. There may also be other plugins that include a markdown block.I apologize for the misrepresentation in my comment, I’m just used to seeing the markdown block as an option on my own blog and at work 😬

@kev @Vollmer True! I typically use that when writing in Gutenberg. However, the Markdown block is better when people want to have the option of copying the post as markdown and I don’t think Gutenberg let’s you do that; you just copy the blocks 🤔I guess there are markdown export plugins, but that may not be ideal if you just want the Markdown from one post.

@kev @Vollmer I think they’ve been making an effort to give you the option to disable whatever you don’t want; breaking different big features up into separate packages. On top of that you can go into the modules settings and turn off whatever features you don’t like. For example I only use the Boost features, Brute-force prevention, and Downtime Monitoring; all part of the free plan.Full disclosure: I work for Automattic so I’m not entirely free of bias although I’m trying to be objective 😅

@kev @Vollmer yeah I could see that. I personally don’t see it aside from notices they inject all over the place, which are very annoying. But I’m ok with that since I like what Jetpack brings to the site and it’s free. I don’t think I’ve noticed anything more invasive than that 🤔

I keep seeing posts that try to be clever with getting around triggering or semi-triggering words — most common example: birdsite instead of Twitter. Can we stop that? You’re making it harder for people that want to avoid the topic to actually do so. Calling a thing something else isn’t going to help, instead you’re just making life more difficult for people that want to avoid these topics.Call things by their proper name so people that want to avoid the topic can filter it properly.

The less clever you are, the better! Make people’s lives easier. Say the word you think is so triggering. The people that are actually triggered have a filter already. The ones that haven’t filtered it either don’t mind seeing it or haven’t filtered it yet.

@amolith I’ve been using them for more than a year now and have no complaints. I have not sought out any information on them, nor have I read any reports of any privacy concerns.I can say that the service is reliable, search results are fantastic in English, decent in other languages (Icelandic in my case), and there are no ads displayed, ever. They also have some interesting features, eg marking sites as “preferred” for search results so they’re rated higher in your searches.
