Hey @Vollmer I just read your post on Hugo (link below for other to check it out). Why not go back to WordPress? Seriously.I know you want to keep your content on markdown format, but that’s easy to export fro, WP to Markdown (I’ve written about it) and you get to play with themes etc. and hopefully write more too.It seems to me that using Hugo is a barrier to your writing; no blogging platform should ever be that IMO.https://www.justinvollmer.com/posts/2022/08/thoughts-on-hugo-after-21-months/

@kev I guess I hadn't really even considered going back to Wordpress... it's a valid option, especially with the WP to Markdown export. I may spin up an instance to try it out again. Thanks for the input!

@kev @Vollmer you can also keep writing in Markdown with the markdown block if you prefer, so if all else fail you could probably just copy-paste your current posts into WP using the markdown block 🤔

@Vollmer If you’re not wedded to FOSS Kirby might meet your needs. I found it much easier to work with than Grav. That said, I would probably lean more toward the advice from @kev - I’ve come to realise that for all its shortcomings, it’s hard to beat WordPress for blogging.

I wonder if using the Web IDE feature of sites like GitHub/GitLab could give the "edit anywhere" experience of Wordpress. The Git hooks/triggers can handle the pushing/posting to the web server too. My workflow is all local but once I push the main branch the whole site rebuilds itself in a couple of seconds and the new content is posted.

@hankg @kev The GitHub/GitLab Web IDE is also an option. I've used it occasionally, but I don't enjoy the experience quite as much. It still requires folder/file creation vs the simple "new blog post" option of something like Wordpress.

@Vollmer @hankg @kev What about something like Dillinger? https://dillinger.io/ Yes, you would have to host it somewhere, but seems to work pretty well on mobile

@TomLarrow @hankg @kev I completely forgot Dillinger existed! I used that back when I first started learning Markdown, but have been using desktop-based tools enough recently that it never even crossed my mind! That could work...

@Vollmer that was one of the frustrations for me with an SSG. I like things to be easy and “New -> Post” is way easier than faffing around with frontmatter.I did have some success with NetlifyCMS too. That could be an option. There’s also Publii which is what I’d personally switch to if i were to ditch WP.https://getpublii.com/@TomLarrow @hankg

@reykjalin @kev Wait... how long has there been a Markdown block??? Is that relatively new?

@Vollmer @kev I thought it was in core, but your surprise made me check again; apparently it’s on my site via Jetpack 😅Jetpack isn’t bad if you turn off all the features except the extra blocks, so using it for just the markdown is probably fine. There may also be other plugins that include a markdown block.I apologize for the misrepresentation in my comment, I’m just used to seeing the markdown block as an option on my own blog and at work 😬

@reykjalin @Vollmer Gutenberg allows for basic markdown out of the box, which I use a lot.For example ## for h2 ‘code’ etc. it’s a good balance.

@kev Even thinking about anything else is a problem. I’ve spent the last two years telling myself I’ll start blogging again just as soon as I’ve switched to an SSG. 🤦‍♂️@Vollmer

@kev @Vollmer True! I typically use that when writing in Gutenberg. However, the Markdown block is better when people want to have the option of copying the post as markdown and I don’t think Gutenberg let’s you do that; you just copy the blocks 🤔I guess there are markdown export plugins, but that may not be ideal if you just want the Markdown from one post.

@reykjalin @Vollmer didnt that it’s bundled in with Jetpack and all the rubbish that comes with. 😕Still might check it out though.

@kev @Vollmer I think they’ve been making an effort to give you the option to disable whatever you don’t want; breaking different big features up into separate packages. On top of that you can go into the modules settings and turn off whatever features you don’t like. For example I only use the Boost features, Brute-force prevention, and Downtime Monitoring; all part of the free plan.Full disclosure: I work for Automattic so I’m not entirely free of bias although I’m trying to be objective 😅

@reykjalin @Vollmer I dont like how jetpack injects itself into every part of the UI. Seems like you can’t eacape from some kind of jetpack “integration” once it’s installed. That’s purely anecdotal of course, I know many people like it.

@kev @Vollmer yeah I could see that. I personally don’t see it aside from notices they inject all over the place, which are very annoying. But I’m ok with that since I like what Jetpack brings to the site and it’s free. I don’t think I’ve noticed anything more invasive than that 🤔
