@LostInCalifornia @Jennifer_Lee @Lilitu @MandyJane @Mariposa @TheWitchBitch @tangleofsnakes Black people took those risks because they viewed voting as something important, something positive. That is not in any way even remotely an appropriate comparison for forced service.

Has anyone read “Feminism for the 99%: A Manifesto”? I’m, uh, struggling. It seems like their basic point is that maybe if women solve all the world’s problems, men will stop hurting us.I just read the bit about “carceral feminism” and, seriously?? I mean, I love the idea of restorative justice, but when men abuse their wives/girlfriends/children, those relationships have been fundamentally built on a sense of male entitlement. Restorative justice in domestic contexts amounts to restoring women as property to their owners. Making a guy slightly less abusive – probably temporarily – towards that goal isn’t going to change the fundamental nature of the relationship.I feel like I must have read something criticizing this “morality by passivity” thing somewhere. Probably with a better name for it. But do they seriously think we should just get rid of laws against sexual slavery? :blobwaitwhat: Then it segues into microloans being proposed by “progressive neoliberals in skirts”, and… yeah… given the context, I don’t think the dehumanization of that turn of phrase is entirely incidental.😔 I just… when did “women are responsible for (solving) all the world’s problems” become feminism?#books #FeministBooks (will this tag please show up? thank you)

@Jennifer_Lee @GCat @Gelatinousrube @Lilitu Vaccination doesn’t prevent disease. US obesity prevalence is 42.4% – childhood obesity 13.4% among 2-5 year olds. Asthma 8% (both children and adults). Endometriosis affects 10% of women. Autoimmune disease 7% of women. We’re more vaccinated than ever and disease is still rampant.Vaccination prevents specific symptom sets, not disease. (Life expectancy overlaps pretty well with poverty and malnutrition.)Meanwhile the people saying vaccination is safe are the same people saying those things I listed above are either behavioral failure, or “just happen”, with a strong flavor of “women are just defective” for the latter two. They’re the same people leaving women with 5 year waits for diagnoses because they’re attached to the idea of “psychosomatic”.The people who said vaccination was safe in the 70s are the same people who thought giving women psych drugs because they were upset about their husbands hitting them was a good idea.Sorry if I’m just not feeling that trusting about your “settled science”.

@LaylaAlexandrovna I'm starting to get some disturbing ideas on why Trudeau might have called an election with this sort of timing after reading that article...

@MandyJane @senryu @NeonPeach As long as they can pretend "those women" chose it, they can pretend they're safe, that they could never become "those women," because they wouldn't "choose" that.

@LaylaAlexandrovna Medically assisted death is massively open to abuse.Society builds expectations. The same sentiment some people are directing towards non-vaccinated people “taking up medical resources” could easily be directed towards disabled people “not making the right choices.”Plus a lot of the assumption that people in a certain state would want to die… is built off very toxic “wow I’d rather die” from people who aren’t actually in that position speaking to people who are, which is kind of insulting. Like “wow I’d rather die than be raped” opening the door for “we should offer all rape victims MAID.” …And then maybe opening the door for “why won’t my [female relative] do the honorable thing,” and potentially increasing stigma against (living) rape victims.I’ve heard stories of medical professionals pressuring disabled people into signing DNR’s, even implying they wouldn’t receive treatment otherwise. Most fundamentally, it’s not about people who don’t want help sustaining life. It’s about people who can’t get help sustaining life, or not adequate help.https://www.citynews1130.com/2020/07/27/vancouver-woman-disabilities-medically-assisted-dying/

Reading Joanna Russ’s How to Suppress Women’s Writing is infuriating. I just read a bit about a woman, a composer, who after marrying was forbidden to write music by her husband. And… that was just women’s lives. Man says no? Well, that’s that then. It’s… ugh.😡 The book itself is good-infuriating, not bad-infuriating, just so that’s clear.#FeministBooks for anyone looking

@TDovelle @LaylaAlexandrovna Creating demand before creating laws? If fully vaccinated people can be forced into camps by this "pandemic of the unvaccinated" you'll be more likely to get them upset over unvaccinated people having *access* to shops to begin with.

So after a year and a half on this site, I finally decided to stop procrastinating and upload an avatar. It's a piece of art by Anne Stokes, if anyone's curious. https://www.deviantart.com/ironshod/art/Mystic-Aura-311015412Might end up changing the header, doesn't seem to work so well *as a header*, but the artwork itself (by Julie Dillon) is really really nice. https://www.deviantart.com/juliedillon/art/The-Archivist-564611828In any case... a year and a half of procrastination isn't *that* bad... is it? :blob_cat:
