@kzimmermann Passwordless ssh is not really 'passwordless' as in: we chopped of half the security of the thing. To, for example login to a server with ssh bob@example.com, you would pre-share the public half of your ssh-key to that server. Then when you connect over ssh, the ssh-daemon will compare your public and private keys and then either let you in or block you. This is convenient and makes automation possible/easy. Locally, your key still has a pw.https://www.redhat.com/sysadmin/passwordless-ssh#security

Not a particular fan of lyft, but their use of open-street-map is laudable (even if it's for selfish reasons.(src, hackernews:)https://eng.lyft.com/how-lyft-discovered-openstreetmap-is-the-freshest-map-for-rideshare-a7a41bf92ecEspecially nice link:https://eng.lyft.com/how-lyft-creates-hyper-accurate-maps-from-open-source-maps-and-real-time-data-8dcf9abdd46a#osm

@metalune Arch (generally) doesn't do anything with upstream packages, Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora often make many changes to upstream packages

@metalune Number of packages can be an approximation, Solus is quite small, Debian, on the other hand, is huge. Makes it easier to know what to expect.500 or 4000 is an important distinction, 4001 or 4002, not so much 😜

@metalune Some smaller distros are english only 🇺🇸 I remember downloading a russian one once, and a chinese one, that was quite a surprise 😮 (but you can only do so much, that's obvious. I'm just listing things I'm interested in 👍 )

@kzimmermann Unpopular opinion: Using FreeBSD for the desktop is going back in time and using Linux from X years ago, which is just a waste of time. (On the server a different story)OpenBSD, though, is a real alternative to Linux (desktop), it is very different from Linux, which it's own strengths and you actually gain something from switching: it's a small, tightly integrated secure system that is possible to understand what is going on under the hood.#BSD not yet dying

@kzimmermann OpenBSD is (relatively) small and tightly integrated. This makes it possible to more or less understand what is happening on your desktop. Installation is simple, adding software as well.A big minus is that a lot of software you're used to on Linux have not been ported (yet), or can't be ported (easily) because it hard depends on some Linux functionality.Still, after Linux, it's my favorite desktop. On an (older) Thinkpad it's close to perfect.#openbsd

@tek Difficult to see why you should provide *three* pieces of identifying information for little-league. And then allowing them to basically do whatever they want with that information is just adding insult to injury.Sometimes I feel a bit paranoid reading "the small print", but there really *are* a$$hats in the world.#privacy

@metalune @XxAlexXx @person "Without adds there wouldn't be free software" is not really true. Most of the Linux infrastructure is free, and virtually none of it is paid with adds.Lots of software is developed just for the fun of it, and especially Apple used to have a very healthy share-ware environment where you paid once for every major version of software.Major companies and app-stores have normalized monetizing users through adds and the sale of personal data.#money
