regarding DistroWiki.. what are the core informations you would want about a distribution.. like, in my mind this would be supported platforms, a description (what makes it different, etc) and download links

@metalune - package manager- number of packages in the repo(s)- build in snap/ flatpak support- default WM- are the packages mostly upstream (like arch), or patched (like debian)- installer localized, or only in english- how often is stuff updated (rolling distro?)#linux distros, because we can't make up our minds

@qwxlea number of packages in the repos... that's gonna be hard to do unless we update it every month or so.... and what are you referring to as "patched"?

@metalune Arch (generally) doesn't do anything with upstream packages, Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora often make many changes to upstream packages

@qwxlea also.. the localized installer thing seems like something *very* specific to ask for

@metalune Number of packages can be an approximation, Solus is quite small, Debian, on the other hand, is huge. Makes it easier to know what to expect.500 or 4000 is an important distinction, 4001 or 4002, not so much 😜

@metalune Some smaller distros are english only 🇺🇸 I remember downloading a russian one once, and a chinese one, that was quite a surprise 😮 (but you can only do so much, that's obvious. I'm just listing things I'm interested in 👍 )

@metalune How would this be different then DistroWatch other then that it works without a gui?

@jason123santa well, yeah, it's mainly that it has a simpler UI, it will run on gemini, it doesn't run off of ads, and it doesn't rank anything, it just lists distros.

@metalune So its more like a website that can used to look for information about a distro. What about including the commands for the package manager of each distro?

@jason123santa yes.. hence the name, distroWIKI.. :Dand I don't know about providing the commands directly, but rather just the package manager in general?

@metalune I like it how distowatch does it. The distro and then the commands to upgrade, search, install, list installed packages and so on.

@metalune well package management is usually almost the only thing that really keeps most systems apart, so o guess that would be an important point.

@sotolf @metalune Yeah it is. If a distro is independent and has almost no support for packages most people will not choose it. Package management is the main thing people talk about when referring to other distros because its the thing that is always different.

@jason123santa @sotolf @metalune I agree. For me, distros differ in two things: the package manager and what are you left with after the installation. And in reality both are just the latter.

@metalune @jason123santa @sotolf Yeah, that's right. Most often than not it comes with the system and sits at its core. I have only used systemd, so I don't think much about it.
