What have I learned after using #FreeBSD for the first time, coming from Linux?https://tilde.town/~kzimmermann/articles/learning_freebsd_as_linux_user.htmlHave you ever tried an OS that wasn't GNU/Linux after switching? How was the experience? This is post 6 of my #100DaysToOffload challenge.

@kzimmermann Unpopular opinion: Using FreeBSD for the desktop is going back in time and using Linux from X years ago, which is just a waste of time. (On the server a different story)OpenBSD, though, is a real alternative to Linux (desktop), it is very different from Linux, which it's own strengths and you actually gain something from switching: it's a small, tightly integrated secure system that is possible to understand what is going on under the hood.#BSD not yet dying

@Twelve whoa, do you mean you tried Linux *before* Windows? How did this happen? What was the first Windows version you tried?

@kzimmermann I've been using Linux 20 years, BSD nearly 10. Maybe because I started when Linux was less polished I'm unafraid of some of the rough edges of BSD, but I prefer it as a server OS because I feel I can understand how it fits together better than Linux, it's a minimalist and better integrated system even compared to pre-systemd Linux.

@kzimmermann my secondary machine runs FreeBSD. My main machine runs Linux.I found that you have to be careful with the refresh rate on your monitor using FreeBSD as a desktop OS.Or else as soon as xorg starts, you will get a "black screen of death".FreeBSD works fine with a very old monitor of mine, but not with a modern one.

I tried Windows 7 to play few games that didn't play well on Valve Proton or Lutris. Other than not seeing beloved BSOD, it was an alright experience.@kzimmermann

@qwxlea hey, thanks for the insight. Very interesting opinion nonetheless!I had been curious as to how *BSD fare in the desktop as I frequently heard of them as preferably server OSes. I was surprised, though, about this part on OpenBSD being a strong desktop candidate, on par if not better than Linux. What does OpenBSD do so well on the desktop that FreeBSD, for example, doesn't?And yes, #BSD is definitely not dead. I might try OpenBSD myself, too.

@murtezayesil yeah, for general gaming I think it's still hard to beat windows, though lots of games from the 2000s seem to play alright here, under #wine. For a while, back in the day, I kept a partition with Windows XP just to play the ones that didn't go along with wine very well, but eventually dropped it altogether for native Linux games.

@kzimmermann OpenBSD is (relatively) small and tightly integrated. This makes it possible to more or less understand what is happening on your desktop. Installation is simple, adding software as well.A big minus is that a lot of software you're used to on Linux have not been ported (yet), or can't be ported (easily) because it hard depends on some Linux functionality.Still, after Linux, it's my favorite desktop. On an (older) Thinkpad it's close to perfect.#openbsd

One game that gave me the most trouble was "The Movies". It needs original DLLs from Microsoft Media Player 11 but that detects wine as anomaly and doesn't install, regardless of 32 or 64 bit wine bottles. Package from winetricks isn't supported by the game either. So I installed Win7 on HDD for that 1 nostalgia.Q: Do Microsoft still offer a way to purchase license legally? Does it even run servers fro validating Win7 or is it abandoned?@kzimmermann
