Have noticed a hostile, anti-newcomer theme from some parts of Mastodon. Like any new platform, people *will* find it difficult at first. People will vocally complain based on their previous experience on other social media.Instead of doubling down and getting pissed off, let's work together. Be inquisitive as to why people sometimes stumble when they get here.Remember what it was like when you first joined the social media behemoths.Adopt a beginners mind, and help each other out.

You can't — on one hand — denounce the toxicity of Twitter, Elon Musk, and other platforms, and on the other, patronize new users of Mastodon by telling them they're "using it wrong", or that their feelings of confusion are invalid.

Tumblr apparently adding ActivityPub support. This'll mean you can follow Tumblr users from Mastodon, and get their content in your feed (and vice versa assumedly). This could either be great or go horribly. Tumblr's a very different kettle of fish to Mastodon, culturally, and I could foresee servers defederating from them.Nonetheless, it's exciting to witness such a large shift in the social media landscape, back towards the original spirit of what the Web was. Interlinked, interoperable.

I recall some musings out of Tumblr years ago around adding ActivityPub support, and I don't think anything happened in the end. There seems to be a real commitment this time around. Will definitely be a weird experience for me to follow @randomuser@tumblr.com here on Mastodon.

I've worked remote for 90% of my career so far.Pros:• more comfortable and less anxiety inducing than an office environment for meCons:• can be incredibly isolating and lonely

@finner https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,_extend,_and_extinguishCountless examples of this in the tech industry. In the comms space, look at what happened with XMPP.Further than that, look at how the same corp responsible for EEE-ing XMPP now has a monopoly in the web browser space and on a lot of web standards bodies, and look at what they've been pulling. Surveillance capitalism isn't compatible with the grassroots power that the fediverse represents for a lot of people. Not every actor is a good actor.

@finner atop that, people have moved to fediverse platforms specifically out of protest and dislike to Meta and Twitter, because they want more faith in those handling their social graph than Meta (who are known to run unethical psychological experiments on users without any consent) and Twitter (nuff said there).

@seldo I don't see a problem in having local instance indexing/search if that instance's community wants it. I also don't see a problem in fediverse-wide search if it's on an opt-in basis.Just because A Thing is possible to do, or because A Thing has been done in other contexts, does not make it automatically socially appropriate or ethical to impose it in another context.I don't understand mocking people for being against overt archiving and public reuse of their data without their consent.

@seldo Again, there's a social context and contract you're disregarding, if the general fediverse-wide consensus is that search should be opt-in.Just because you CAN do something on a technical level, does not mean that you get a pass on ignoring the social/community impact of that something.Data is federated for the purpose of people connecting with others socially, not to have data scraped, dumped in ElasticSearch, and compiled in a place where they no longer have control over visibility.

#fediblockalpaca.goldSmall instance administered by a data scientist/Silicon Valley techbro.Admin publicly signified that personal data collected through federation with alpaca.gold is retained forever, usable in whatever manner he pleases, shrugged off any potential ethical/legal implications around PII and processing consent wrt EU citizens.‼️ Please read the full thread below for context; research yourself, then act if appropriate for your community.https://alpaca.gold/@seldo/110656310706307645

@BrodieOnLinux such a weak statement. The reality is that fans of yours are congregating in your comment section and directing vitriol and hatred towards a FOSS developer. It's harassment. The onus is not on the affected developer, nor the community you refer to, to expect and mitigate abuse coming from inside your house. You have an obligation to play an active role in stopping it. Tell your fans this behaviour isn't okay, directly.

@BrodieOnLinux you DO control your comment section and other forums you can moderate, though. You DO have influence over your fans. They trust you, they listen to you. Whether you recognize it or not, you have power here.So use it. Make a simple statement to your fans to stop harassing him. Let them know that abusing and brigading open source projects isn't fine, and you won't tolerate it in your community. Remove abusive comments and personalized statements about the developer.Bare minimum.

@BrodieOnLinux and how's that working out?Because from what I can see, this exact pattern has happened multiple times as a direct result of your videos/lack of oversight.Putting aside that hateful, personalized comments about a real, living, feeling person isn't a "problem" that people need to "talk through" — it's abuse and harassment, and you're tolerating it — the people "ranting" and being "toxic" are continuing to brigade FOSS projs and make the lives of volunteers a nightmare.

@BrodieOnLinux but you're not challenging them. You've just put out a statement to instruct FOSS projects to deal with it, without challenging the perpetrators — your fans. You're absolving yourself of your responsibility. In the time you've been talking to me, you could've put out a statement here on Mastodon and a video condemning the harassment and telling people who stand by it to fuck off from your community. Are you scared of how your fans would react to you as well?
