If anyone is causing issues in your repo I want you to ban them. It doesn't matter which project that is in, please ban them immediately.I don't want people to go and disrupt your repo, but I don't have the power to ban them from your project, I also don't have the ability to mind control people to stop them from going and bothering you either.I am going to continue covering FOSS because I think it's incredibly important that people know what is happening in the projects they use.

If anyone wants to rant about a project, please do so under my comment section or as a reply to posts like this one so you don't go and disturb the developers.I think it's much healthier to have opinions about a project out in the open where you can criticize them rather than push them away and let them fester into something much worse.

@BrodieOnLinux such a weak statement. The reality is that fans of yours are congregating in your comment section and directing vitriol and hatred towards a FOSS developer. It's harassment. The onus is not on the affected developer, nor the community you refer to, to expect and mitigate abuse coming from inside your house. You have an obligation to play an active role in stopping it. Tell your fans this behaviour isn't okay, directly.

@BrodieOnLinux you DO control your comment section and other forums you can moderate, though. You DO have influence over your fans. They trust you, they listen to you. Whether you recognize it or not, you have power here.So use it. Make a simple statement to your fans to stop harassing him. Let them know that abusing and brigading open source projects isn't fine, and you won't tolerate it in your community. Remove abusive comments and personalized statements about the developer.Bare minimum.

I do get this is in response to your viewers bothering the people behind the projects you cover, something I've come to dub "The Lunduke effect". But do keep in mind that not everyone participating will be there to flame and by encouraging maintainers to simply ban people rather than triage good faith interaction from the bad. You'll end up reinforcing the sort of mentality you'll find in NixOS and GNOME where people assume the worst and ban first then ask questions later.@BrodieOnLinux@mstdn.social

@slopsec Specially people that are going and disrupting the repo should be banned, obviously if they're encouraged to help out from my coverage then that's different. The reason the videos tend to drag on so long is I'm not a fan of how he tends to cover topics, I try to include as much surrounding context as makes sense.

@osslate If people are going to be toxic I want them to remain in my comments section so that people who disagree with them can talk through the problems the face in a place that is not going to disrupt the developers.

@BrodieOnLinux and how's that working out?Because from what I can see, this exact pattern has happened multiple times as a direct result of your videos/lack of oversight.Putting aside that hateful, personalized comments about a real, living, feeling person isn't a "problem" that people need to "talk through" — it's abuse and harassment, and you're tolerating it — the people "ranting" and being "toxic" are continuing to brigade FOSS projs and make the lives of volunteers a nightmare.

@BrodieOnLinux @osslate but I would like to vent about a software that I will not name, but it purports to do a lot of very useful things, but instead of doing that, it gives me a gray screen and hangs a lot of the time. It makes me angry, especially because it is a very popular and well-regarded software.

@osslate Removing people from my comments doesn't make those real, living, feeling people go away, all it does is push them into deeper spaces where they go unchallenged.

@BrodieOnLinux but you're not challenging them. You've just put out a statement to instruct FOSS projects to deal with it, without challenging the perpetrators — your fans. You're absolving yourself of your responsibility. In the time you've been talking to me, you could've put out a statement here on Mastodon and a video condemning the harassment and telling people who stand by it to fuck off from your community. Are you scared of how your fans would react to you as well?

@BrodieOnLinux I guess proprietary software and SaaSS and banning people for calling out proprietary software is an extremely "FOSS" take.
