I don't really think I see why everyone is so up in arms about #meta starting up an activity based server and joining the fediverse. Other than being owned/controlled by a corporation rather than she rando, how is their server going to be any different? It's not like they can just take everything over. If you don't want to federate, you, or your instance admins, have the power to block. So why is this such a big ordeal?

Just to clarify, I'm by no means advocating that meta or any other corporate interest be welcomed into the fediverse and our spaces. All I'm saying is that there's not a whole lot we can do besides block. And I realize that some people could be forced to migrate their instance should their admins decide not to block. A bit inconvenient perhaps, but at least we have that option available.

@finner https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,_extend,_and_extinguishCountless examples of this in the tech industry. In the comms space, look at what happened with XMPP.Further than that, look at how the same corp responsible for EEE-ing XMPP now has a monopoly in the web browser space and on a lot of web standards bodies, and look at what they've been pulling. Surveillance capitalism isn't compatible with the grassroots power that the fediverse represents for a lot of people. Not every actor is a good actor.

@osslate @finner Except, preemptive defederation does zero to stop EEE attacks. Only defense is to keep vigilant in our own development and implementation of the standards on our side.

@finner atop that, people have moved to fediverse platforms specifically out of protest and dislike to Meta and Twitter, because they want more faith in those handling their social graph than Meta (who are known to run unethical psychological experiments on users without any consent) and Twitter (nuff said there).
