@seldo I don't see a problem in having local instance indexing/search if that instance's community wants it. I also don't see a problem in fediverse-wide search if it's on an opt-in basis.Just because A Thing is possible to do, or because A Thing has been done in other contexts, does not make it automatically socially appropriate or ethical to impose it in another context.I don't understand mocking people for being against overt archiving and public reuse of their data without their consent.

@osslate they are posting publicly to a federated network, each node of which stores their posts forever. I do indeed mock somebody who's okay with that but not okay with searching it.

@seldo Again, there's a social context and contract you're disregarding, if the general fediverse-wide consensus is that search should be opt-in.Just because you CAN do something on a technical level, does not mean that you get a pass on ignoring the social/community impact of that something.Data is federated for the purpose of people connecting with others socially, not to have data scraped, dumped in ElasticSearch, and compiled in a place where they no longer have control over visibility.

@osslate @seldo general fediverse consensus is not 'search is bad'. instance software other than mastodon (pleroma, akkoma, misskey) implements local search, and is widely used. if you dont want your posts indexed and searchable, block all non-mastodon instances at the /etc/hosts level.

@osslate @seldo this is not an imposition, it is the nature of the protocol.your posts federate. they are placed in an index automatically (such that the instance software can function). what is the issue with *looking at the index that already exists*
