I mean the French from Francebasically, ok, the word "pédé" short for "pedophile" is a common slur for gay men specifically in France (we say "tapette" here, more like "pansy")aaaaand this has been reclaimed by like, French radqueers ??? like "faggot" or "queer"such that "transpédégouine" is a term you see in French radical lit sometimesand it's likeI am 100% not feeling this one my dudes and enbies 👀

@peoplelikedogs oh I've known about it for years, and rejected it both before AND after I understood it 😆just to infodump about French terminology more: apparently in the early '90s, people tried to make "allosexuel" a thing, as an equiv to "queer", but it didn't catch cuz it sucks. and of course later anglo ace folks would repurpose that term as meaning basically "not asexual"!

@peoplelikedogs I accept that "pédé" sort of just means "gay man", not "pedophile", even though the "all gay men are pedophiles" is baked right in thereso, like, if I was in high school and I was standing up to my bullies or somethjing, I might think it's provisionally okay to say "actually fuck you I am a pédé"but seems like, as a collective identity we are gonna affirm and give positive meaning to, it's not great!

Turkey lifted objections to Finland and Sweden joining NATO. I think this is worse than the alternative, all things considered. A lot of people would have died if Turkey had done a heelspin on NATO, and it would be bad news for the Kurds. But now - because of the specific threats to Lithuania (and, to some degree, the larger Baltic area), there is a move towards a bipolar conflict again rather than a multipolar one, and it's still gonna be bad news for the Kurdsthere is still gonna be no solidarity for the Ukrainians, who are in the sacrifice zone. There may, however, be extraterritorial repression operations by the Turkish state and permitted by Sweden, Finland, and like all the other NATO countries tooworst possible situation. and that's not even considering whether direct NATO-Russia hostilities actually begin (as is threatened right now over Lithuania)

The Guardian printed an essay from the Chinese ambassador to the UK, who writes:"Taiwan has been an inalienable part of China’s territory since ancient times" ok lol noIf we are to accept the "inalienability" of territory, we must accept one of two other things, neither of which applies to China before a certain time period. The first is some kind of conception of "the Chinese" (of whom there are ethnic subgroups, if we wanna go there) as an organic "indigenous" entity, e.g. the people of the land, comparable to other conceptions (but over a vaster territory than is usually argued). Seems a bit rich given Taiwan has its own indigenous people, who speak multiple (Austronesian) languages that bear no discernible genetic relationship to any Chinese (Sino-Tibetan) language of the type that is more common on the mainlandThe second is a "republican" and "national" conception that, while certainly widespread now, was very late to come to ChinaBefore that, lots of parts of the Chinese territory were pretty damn alienable, and indeed were alienated by treaty. I think it is fair to repudiate foreign powers and the authority of Qing dynasts, but like, what makes the 1895 loss of Taiwan different from only slightly earlier cessions of territory to Russia?

so: being paternalistic is bad, being paternalistic in some of the ways that I understand might be happening based on the posts I'm seeing might be especially bad, and, in the context of an individualistic culture, it's considered uncool to express any opinion to the effect of Your Consumption Choice Is Bad (and "consumption" is an interesting category to unpack here, Graeber has an essay about this which I remember thinking was alright)since I negged one specific Portland-based public figure the other day about joining Bluesky when he said he wouldn't join Mastodon for basically no other reason than "nah", despite what I think are its Clear Technical Virtue, I feel motivated to explain why... I think it is okay, in principle, to be mad that people would get excited about the new Dorsey project vs., like, something/anything that uses ActivityPuband this is cuz I actually think, in principle, it is okay to judge people for their consumption choices and create less individualistic cultures that, y'know, conform to "best practices" in some wayMuch to unpack here, but this is about more than social media, where "best practices" maybe actually means throw phones in the river (not literally, bad for fish)

Anyway. I think this is something better done in community, with IRL friends and stuff, than trying to tell some internet stranger that they should or should not wear a mask at the grocery store, use Mastodon, etc. Still very hard, and you might lose a friend or two, but like, I have changed my ways cuz I had a convo with a person or read/watched something they recommended, and I'm about as stubborn as anyone else, rightHaving material supports to help people skill up and/or get the hardware or gear they need won't hurt eitherBack to social media: it seems to me that a lot of people found Mastodon confusing and/or cringe and/or racist, which, um, it often is. Bluesky at least has VC funding and is slick and has the promise of the... better days, before Musk took over? lol. Anyway @rose had a very good description of this: chaotic flea markets, shiny new malls, etc., and the fact that some people will always prefer one thing over the other
