so: being paternalistic is bad, being paternalistic in some of the ways that I understand might be happening based on the posts I'm seeing might be especially bad, and, in the context of an individualistic culture, it's considered uncool to express any opinion to the effect of Your Consumption Choice Is Bad (and "consumption" is an interesting category to unpack here, Graeber has an essay about this which I remember thinking was alright)since I negged one specific Portland-based public figure the other day about joining Bluesky when he said he wouldn't join Mastodon for basically no other reason than "nah", despite what I think are its Clear Technical Virtue, I feel motivated to explain why... I think it is okay, in principle, to be mad that people would get excited about the new Dorsey project vs., like, something/anything that uses ActivityPuband this is cuz I actually think, in principle, it is okay to judge people for their consumption choices and create less individualistic cultures that, y'know, conform to "best practices" in some wayMuch to unpack here, but this is about more than social media, where "best practices" maybe actually means throw phones in the river (not literally, bad for fish)

Anyway. I think this is something better done in community, with IRL friends and stuff, than trying to tell some internet stranger that they should or should not wear a mask at the grocery store, use Mastodon, etc. Still very hard, and you might lose a friend or two, but like, I have changed my ways cuz I had a convo with a person or read/watched something they recommended, and I'm about as stubborn as anyone else, rightHaving material supports to help people skill up and/or get the hardware or gear they need won't hurt eitherBack to social media: it seems to me that a lot of people found Mastodon confusing and/or cringe and/or racist, which, um, it often is. Bluesky at least has VC funding and is slick and has the promise of the... better days, before Musk took over? lol. Anyway @rose had a very good description of this: chaotic flea markets, shiny new malls, etc., and the fact that some people will always prefer one thing over the other
