Not quite the same, but I've just finished watching The Witcher. It's really well made in that they have three time lines that slowly converge, and little by little you understand that the thing happened decades later than that other thing.

I've started being a tea fairy in the latest lockdown. I ordered Pu Erh for one friend who loves Chinese tea, and some interesting herbal teas for another friend. They were delivered anonymously. Then a week later saw lovely posts on facebook with pics of the tea and a message of 'who sent me this tea? thank you'. I later contacted each of them to say hello, and enjoy the tea. Now I need to find more friends who really like tea. 😀

I'd keep the name, and just add a reference somewhere, e.g., a sign "Welcome to Tesla, named after Nikola" or a statue of Nikola Tesla in the main square or something.

Pi Day is only observed in the US, where 14 March is written as 3/14. The rest of the world writes it as 14/3. We could, of course celebrate Pi Day on 31 April, 31/4. The only problem is... April only has 30 days!

I was at the gym today. The cross trainers sometimes make you walk ('pedal') backwards. It's a very different feeling, and you can feel it's activating different muscles. Or activating muscles differently? Anyway, I'm not surprised it's good exercise.

Someone in my #writing group, whose opinion I respect and who's doing a Masters in Creative Writing, responded to my draft #sci-fi story with this:I am excited by how incredible this piece is. I am going to highlight things that give me pause with extreme prejudice because this piece is easily one of the best spec fic short stories I have read all semester (including published pieces). Seriously, this piece is FUCKING BRILLIANT!😮 Must edit and submit...#writingcommunity

#Japan is releasing water from #Fukushima into the ocean after treatment. There are popular protests and formal objections from #China and #SouthKorea.#Nuclear waste is no joke, and there is no perfect solution. But to the best of my understanding, this is a safe and possibly the best solution. In fact, there is an argument for releasing the water faster than Japan is planning. Keeping ever growing amounts of radioactive water for decades is not a good idea. This is considered leaving the problem for future generations, something the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) advises against. So although "nuclear power plants worldwide have routinely discharged water containing tritium for over 60 years without harm to people or the environment, most at higher levels than planned for Fukushima," popular opinion says otherwise, with China banning Japanese seafood.

A message from Breaking the Silence. (full text below the image)There are some things that must be made crystal clear: #Hamas has committed crimes that should horrify any decent person. As people who firmly criticize Israeli policy in the #Gaza Strip and the West Bank on a daily basis, it is our moral duty to state things as they are: this weekend, Hamas blatantly violated humanity’s basic moral norms. As people who have been in the struggle against occupation and apartheid for twenty years, we must unequivocally state that it’s impossible to justify the massacre of hundreds of civilians at a music festival, or the murder and kidnapping of countless men, women and children – even in the name of an anti-colonial struggle or popular struggle. It is impossible to construct theoretical justifications for the kidnapping of mothers and their children, of senior citizens, of teenagers. The struggle for human rights does not differentiate between blood, between people of different religions, ethnicities and nationalities, and it is incumbent upon us to be consistent. The struggle for the legitimate rights of one nation cannot be an excuse to decimate the rights of another. That is a basic principle: not only of international law, but of simple moral decency. Without this, all that’s left is a cycle of blind, indiscriminate revenge. Those who find some kind of twisted theoretical logic in order to justify a massacre are not fighting for human rights, and push the goal of liberation further out of reach.Almost every one of us knows someone who was killed, was taken hostage, gone missing, or spent hours locked in bomb shelters in fear for their lives. Many have no idea where their loved ones are, more than 48 hours since the start of fighting. We are anxious for the welfare of our families, as well as for the welfare of our Palestinian partners and for the innocent civilians who live in this land from the river to the sea.We dedicate our lives to the struggle to end occupation and the siege on Gaza because no human being should live under tyranny, and because no one’s blood is redder than any other. Every single person who lives in this land deserves to live a good life, safe and free. This is why we struggle – and will continue to struggle – against collective punishment, against killings, against the dangerous policies to “maintain occupation” and the rounds of endless war. This is why we will continue the struggle, as we have for years, against the indiscriminate firing policies in Gaza. Our stance is clear: every human being deserves a life of safety and freedom. Palestinians and Israelis both.#Israel #Palestine

#MythologyMonday - big catsSamson challenges his wedding guests to answer the riddleOut of the eater came something to eat,and out of the strong came something sweet. This is a reference to Samson's earlier adventures killing a lion, and later passing the same way and finding honeybees and honey in the corpse. The wedding guests extort the answer from Delilah, Samson's wife. As Samson lost the wager, he has to give his 30 guests a good suit each. He acquires them by killing thirty men. Ain't the Old Testament grand?

“No computers.” the guard said harshly, holding out a metal box.I put my phone in the box. He didn’t budge. I took off my smart watch and added it in.“Are you sure you have no more computers? The detector sends out a brief EMP. It would be a shame to destroy any gadgets. Or injure you." He was staring at the side of my face.Ah. I removed the Connex from my temple. I’d forgotten it was there. He ushered me into what looked like an old electronic doorway, then pressed a button. A light flashed."You're free to enter. Enjoy." No smile.I passed through a corridor to desk where a receptionist smiled. "First time?""Yes, is it obvious?""Don't worry. It's simple. Through the double doors there you'll find the main selection of books, by era and topic. It's colour-coded and easy to follow. You'll need these if you want to touch anything." She put a paper mask and thin laboratory gloves on the desk."Behind you is the iffy section, as we call it. Books printed after 2015.""2015?! I thought AI printed books only appeared in the mid 2020s.""That's probably true, but we can't be sure. Preserving authentic pre-AI knowledge is our raison d'être. We can't be too safe."Her look turned serious and I saw the devotion to the cause in her eyes. Since the Big Corruption of '32, no digital files could be trusted to replicate original human knowledge. This library was a time capsule."Can books be taken out?""No, I'm afraid not. We couldn't let them back in, as they could be fakes.""So, can I copy things? My phone and Connex were taken away. Do you have a camera to message me chapters?""No, we're strictly machine-free. but we have several scribes. They're very good." She was enjoying my puzzled look."They can copy down whole pages for you. With pen and paper," she answered my unspoken question."Pen and paper?" these were words of tales and myths."Come, I'll show."#devotion #MastoPrompt #microfiction #AI #ArtificialIntelligence

“Could it be mitochondrial DNA?”“No, ma’am, it doesn’t work that way.”“And it’s not just a random mutation?”“No, we’ve had 174 pairs of identical twins volunteering, and it’s always the same. In each pair, there’s this one DNA edit in the same place: an almost identical gene, but at the end of the strand one sibling has a different base - CGAT - than the other.”“And we don’t otherwise know what this section of DNA does?”“Well... that’s where it gets interesting. All people have this gene, but it has some edits near the end of the strand. We thought it was random mutations on an inactive gene, but it turns out, each person has different bases. In twins it’s just... consecutive.”“You mean...?”“Yes, ma’am. It’s a serial number.”#microfiction #scifi #dna #creepy

@Unixbigot I avoid the problem: I stick to analogue genders and refuse the digital ones. I gave on trying to calibrate the beacons years ago, they kept rounding off my gender to the nearest protocol derived one.
