@micahflee After having been to Ferguson... why the hell does that even matter? I talked to guys who believed what cops had told them - that it was illegal for 3 or more (black) people to walk together on the street.

@carolannie Isn't that more or less the gist behind US antitrust law?@dylanmorgan @davidmouritsen @kims @bradweed @blair_fix @pluralistic

@sneak The US government gets really weird about things having to do with space. I wrote a NASA patent once. The filing for it got me a little confused because you need to get anything space-related cleared with NASA first.Fortunately, New Space is a Thing and there are other orgs that escape the atmosphere now.

@sneak I asked them about it. It was something about the kinetic energy of a rock outside our atmosphere being equivalent to the largest bomb we have dropped.

@neil@mastodon.neilzone.co.uk Actually, that was metadata encoded in the image... If you're going to bother with e2e encryption, don't be an idiot and send images with your (partner's) phone number in the metadata.

@kairyssdal But it does have to do with something their electorate can wrap their heads around that sounds good for their interests.

@alex This reminds me of my own experience launching a balloon into near space with a bunch of hobbyists about 10 years ago. We attempted to figure out who we might want to register it with and came up with a "no one cares" although I did find some suggestion that we should include some chaff in case it was big enough to bother airplanes. NOW they care, I guess. I wonder if they have a reporting process for hobbyists yet. Somehow I find that doubtful.

@Mer__edith It really makes me wonder what the people who make these things think medical advice is comprised of. If this is all they expect... no wonder the rest of the world is beating us in health care.

@david The only challenge there is getting good content for that frame. I could see it having content like what Amazon has when you hit pause, which includes names of all the actors who are on screen. I could also see subscribing to a separate content provider, but in today's climate, it would have to map to the ideological leanings of the subscribers.

@david That sounds reasonable, so long as you could get some kind of key into various players. I can't tell the number of times I bounced between pausing and running a crunchyroll video because the subtitles scrolled too fast, but the pause put text details of what I was watching over the subtitles I was trying to read.

@brewsterkahle Yes, it's true... but it's terrible for a resume.

@alex Wow, that's impressive. I had heard "some" uninsured deposits would be available, since they were already in talks to sell the bank. Good to see that some has changed to all.

@simon alright, I have to know. What law was enacted that made them illegal? I'm assuming it's a British law. I would love to see the wording on that. I really want to know!

@futurebird In SF, the problem becomes especially stark with older youth and adults, particularly disabled. On a sunny Sunday you will see them all coming out of their single room apartments to hang out at *the federal building* (I kid you not!) because that's the best place to hang out without having to pay for it.

@tomjennings @futurebird kids still in school get free muni with school ID, so they can make it out to GG no problem, where there at least is plenty of space to just hang out. Ocean beach is another good option. But if they fail through the system, they really fall through.

OK, I just had a horrible thought. When reading the news I saw that he shows no evidence of stroke or seizure disorder that caused him to freeze. My mental response was "No, it was a sudden attack of conscience that took him a while to recover from." I am a bad person.

@Revertron This has been tried many times. The problem is we don't really have a good working definition of privacy that everyone can agree on, much less what summarizations mean.
