In many parts of the US there is no where teens can hang out without spending money. My South Bronx neighborhood probably beats many cities, suburbs and small towns. (we have a skate park, and a larger park with benches-- though could use more options, for example a nicer library for kids who don't like noise)In some towns libraries ban "teens congregating" playgrounds are out of bounds & groups of teens get the cops called on them. This is the real reason young people don't go out anymore.

@futurebird In SF, the problem becomes especially stark with older youth and adults, particularly disabled. On a sunny Sunday you will see them all coming out of their single room apartments to hang out at *the federal building* (I kid you not!) because that's the best place to hang out without having to pay for it.

@longobord @futurebird In San Francisco in the late 80s/early 90s we (Shred of Dignity Skaters' Union) brought skateboard ramps for public use to state DMV parking lots (esp the one in the Haight). As state property the local cops didn't care much. This problem isn't new of course, but I can't imagine how bad it is for kids, today.

@tomjennings @futurebird kids still in school get free muni with school ID, so they can make it out to GG no problem, where there at least is plenty of space to just hang out. Ocean beach is another good option. But if they fail through the system, they really fall through.
