Inspired by @ehashman I will also occasionally post food pictures here. This was last weekend's shrimp curry (without the use of curry powder/blends) over rice with toasted coconut. Naan was store bought, I ran out of time to attempt my own... this time. After making curry from scratch I now understand why Indian kitchens have such a large quantity and variety of spices.

In today's episode of "open source washing", we have a crowd-sourced Non-Disclosure Agreement which claims to be 'open source' but is distributed under CC-BY-ND 4.0 International. "No Derivatives" and "open source" are not compatible concepts.https://onenda.org/aboutCC @richardfontana @pchestek @luis_in_brief @karen @mccoysmith

In today's episode of 'website security theatre' we present the US Government's "TreasuryDirect" site. They don't just disable copy-and-paste into the password field, they disable *keyboard entry* into the password field. You are required to click buttons on this virtual keyboard in order to enter your password. Kudos to them for making high-entropy random passwords difficult to use!Oh, and the password is also case-insensitive, probably because implementing shift-key support in the virtual keyboard would have been too complex.#Password #SecurityTheatre

At a group dinner here last night (#FOSDEM) I met a young man from Alabama in the USA... a place I lived for about 7 years. He lives in a relatively low-population area, not a large city, and this trip to Europe is his first outside the USA.He commented that in general all of the food he'd eaten on this trip, except for stuff he purchased from "American" brands like Domino's, has been much higher quality than what he normally eats at home.If it's that noticeable by one person on their first trip outside the USA, the USA's food system has a very serious problem.

Does anyone actually understand the audience and purpose of the "He Gets Us" TV commercials? The one I saw yesterday and today has the statement "Jesus loved the people we hate." No matter how I try to parse that, it's not a positive statement, regardless of who 'we' might be. If the creators of the commercial are indicating that they 'hate' some people, that in itself is a testament to their lack of willingness to be a part of a collaborative and trusting community.Even so, if *they* hate some people but Jesus loved them, how is that "getting us"?If this is supposed to be some sort of 'rebranding' effort, it's falling miserably with this person (granted, I'm an atheist so the rebranding bar is rather high).

In case you haven't heard, Red Hat is laying off people today, and I'm one of them. My 'career' as a Hatter lasted just over 15 months, much less time than I had planned or expected. Many of you know me well, and know that I have extensive background in open source software, project management, open source business, and lots of related activities. If you're aware of any opportunities which may be of interest, feel free to send them my way via any channel you like.Boosts much appreciated, of course, and thanks in advance!#FediHire

Also, in case anyone hasn't noticed, this is exactly on-point for what is happening all over the tech industry. Red Hat had a pretty good Q1, IBM had a decent Q1, IBM generated US$1.3B in *free cash flow* (discretionary cash after all operating and capital expenses), but the method they chose to realign their investments in products and technologies is by reducing the workforce (which was already barebones in many places).

In fact I'll take this a step further with some math:Let's assume the published number of terminated employees is 800. Let's also assume that they get paid US$225,000 per year (very high average estimate), and that Red Hat's overhead per employee is 40%.That's US$315,000 per year per person, times 800 people that's US$252M per year. IBM (of which RH is a significant chunk) produces that much free cash flow in *three weeks*.There is no way that terminating all of these people is going to free up so much cash to invest in strategic projects that it can be worth the harm caused to 800 people and their families, and the knowledge loss in the organization, and the attrition that will follow as the remaining people get even more burned out.

@lauren Forgive the clearly-uninformed question but what are the supposed benefits of using generative AI for search? I don't want the results to include things that *could* exist...

@alcinnz @nihilazo @calcifer It's not hard to make the situation clear in the README file in my experience. Not much different from the situation when the developer needs to stop providing support after some event in their life.Publishing it may give someone else a jumpstart in their own project and it would be a shame to keep that from happening just because you are 'throwing it over the wall'. You don't know if someone is on the other side ready to catch it!

@derek The perceived risk is that they will launch an 'enhanced' experience that is only available to users on their sites, including ads, and attempt to draw a high percentage of users to their sites.Same thing they did with XMPP.
