@Radical_EgoCom @jmccabe the fact that they used the state and hierarchical institutions was antithetical to communism, and so was the way in which they used them.

@Radical_EgoCom my anti-suffering stance does extend to enemies but often removing people from positions of power takes priority over whether not they'll survive the removal process let alone whether or not they'll enjoy it.

@aral I once coded after a particularly dank cone of green stuff and thankfully I never found any bugs in that program because it was about as legible as its corresponding compiler output.

@Radical_EgoCom I don't think the transition to communism can be instantaneous but I also don't believe the period of transition would be anything remotely like what people call a "transitional state"

@Radical_EgoCom I figure the most likely scenario is people manage to set up mutual aid based infrastructure either without involving the state or despite the state's efforts to repress it, but it takes a while after that for the state to actually become irrelevant.

@yogthos since Xi Jinping broadly understands the difference between how the Chinese economy actually works and how Western MLs describe it there's no way he'd stand by and let the US collapse without propping it up for as long as possible.

@ajroach42 the year that I spent most time in cinemas it was only $8 for a ticket. My usual movie theatre ended up closing when engineers determined it had accumulated too much earthquake damage to be safe.

@Radical_EgoCom Kropotkin actually figured out a way to do that, but it would take a fair bit more participation than we know how to rally up.

@Radical_EgoCom @kingtor the bolsheviks became counter-revolutionary well before external threats became an issue: even joining forces with the German Imperial Army to attack other socialist projects.

@Radical_EgoCom @antipode77 I remain unconvinced that a transitional state would be at all useful, let alone necessary.

@Radical_EgoCom @kingtor A tactical alliance would have been more like a ceasefire with the whites without actually helping them, not joining them in a war of attrition so bad they collapsed immediately after technically winning it.

@Radical_EgoCom @NoiseColor @yogthos immediate transition is not only possible in theory but actually has some precedent (although so far it's only happened in the wrong place and time to last at scale for more than a few years). On the other hand expecting a transitional state to actually continue the transition is even less rational than expecting Jesus to show up and start helping.

@Radical_EgoCom @NoiseColor @yogthos Rosa Luxemburg explained all this better than I could and she wasn't even an anarchist (but really take your pick of almost any non-ML communist theorist). But in summary: implementing communism inherently deprives counterrevolution of the capital it needs to function, so any delay in implementing communism is at best a strategic error and at worst an indication that the org has already become counterrevolutionary.

@Radical_EgoCom @NoiseColor @yogthos the threat of internal counter-revolution actually can be easily brushed away as thoroughly demonstrated by both logic and history: it's only a significant problem for projects that attempt a "transitional state".History also shows how directly implementing communism doesn't in itself make the project vulnerable to imperialism, but rather starting too small does.

@yogthos @Aatube "creating these things requires having some form of central planning and authority" is literal superstition.

@Kroc I'm actually pretty curious about how software would handle having half the cores using a completely different instruction set.

@foone I have compiled Firefox before but that was when one could just do `./configure && make` and wait for a few hours.

@foone what does "platform" mean here? You're reminding me of my Makefile that calls pandoc but also giving the impression that you have a different problem from the one that solves.
