@wizzwizz4 @mgiagante True. I think the whole "free marketplace of ideas" is a sham. Some people's voices are used to silence folks from marginalized communities (or even advocate their death in a stochastic-terroristic way), so their very speech hurts other's free speech (and maybe their lives and health).1/2

@wizzwizz4 @mgiagante Also, we should stop treating harmful conspiratorial discourse as being on the same level as science. It normalizes it and gives the idea of a center being the reasonable choice (Overton Window).2/2

@wizzwizz4 @oleg Yeah, you're probably right. I remember enjoying her book in my libertarian phase, and laughing out loud with some of the essays' ideas.

@aseem It's all a big meaningless spectacle, like Wile E. Coyote running into thin air. The real elections happened when Sanders and Warren lost to Biden. I don't quite understand why the republicans aren't happy about Biden being the president, but then again, they call him a socialist.

@aseem @sotolf Fosstodon's code of conduct requires us to use content warnings for everything that may be controversial. That's why you may find lots of toots with US politics (uspol) CW these days because of the elections and the riots/coup.

@mgiagante @wizzwizz4 Returning to the Mozilla post, what they're advocating for is for people to have available information regarding the validity of the claims of online actors and the advertisers behind these actors. Being informed about our sources is a big part of free speech, specially when we have platforms that allow us to repost stuff without giving it a second thought. Is uninformed speech really free?

@floppy @wizzwizz4 @mgiagante Hitler advocated for segregation and genocide. I don't think there is ever going to be a scenario where "let's let them speak and see what happens" is a good idea.

@tulpa @oleg @wizzwizz4 I even got into Ortega y Gasset in my early twenties, who got me obsessed over freedom and mediocrity, and that was kind of scary.

@oleg OMG, your blog looks so cute yet simple! Great text, too. I'm looking forward to the success of your idea.

@thumb Sounds like an idea for a Japanese horror movie from the 2000's.

@aseem: There's a risk of confusing things. The centralization is so big in these social media platforms that they factually establish themselves as the public forums, while they still are private. Being private gives them the right to fix and enforce their terms of service as they see fit... and so they do --rather arbitrarily in lots of cases if you ask me.--1/2

@aseem: The lines become blurry. YouTube/Facebook/Twitter act like public services, but they still are technically not. They don't owe us a platform nor free speech, even though being deplatformed kind of leaves us speechless in many cases. And let's not talk about their vague ToS that allow them to block harmful content only when it's useful to their image and interests.2/2

@aseem Yeah, but social media algorythms already created ideological ecochambers and had a risk of radicalization. Contrapoints' videos can only do so much. And this at least is taking a stance against non-acceptable speech. Alt-right/neonazi groups have existed for a long time. There's a really interesting podcast that studies their "safe spaces" called 'I don't speak German.'

@aseem That would be more of a healing towards change rather than a healing back to Obama. Let us hope alright.

@urusan In South America we're still struggling with tattoos. Transhumanism is going to take a while.

@urusan @sotolf I think you'd need some kind of prosthetic aid, like surgically inserted lens or a pacemaker, in order to consider the transhuman side, instead of a mere operation. Returning a person to their original abilities would suffice, imo.
