@monorailIt's only doing updates for a paid version and f-droid, neither of which is accessible to me so I don't want to use it any more. But people in other circumstances still can! I've found it to be a really useful app and the developer so far to be responsive and hard-working.

Just saw an fb friend say " 'Assigned male' sounds like homework. Study hard or you won't pass the boy test!"Haha. Female is just one of the assignments I've failed at, yes. :)

The next best thing to an image description is a CW that includes "no image description" in its text.Seriously, I was so happy to see that a couple times today. If you can't do it, or you just can't be bothered, it helps me if you say it's not there. It genuinely can feel disappointing or isolating to hope for one and find nothing. Better to know not to expect it.

Argh my phone is not really giving me notifications for anything any more unless I open the app in question, and sometimes I think not even then? It is meaning people are getting upset with me for not replying to them and that's starting to cause me a lot of anxiety. As far as I can tell, my notification settings haven't changed and I should be getting them. I'm just...not.

I didn't realize how central to my feelings about Jupiter the Great Red Spot is until I learned we might be in its last days now!https://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/jupiter-great-red-spot-1.5154387I knew that it hadn't always been there, that early telescopes didn't see it (I loved that fact). So I shouldn't be surprised it's going. I also knew other jovian features disappear https://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2010/20may_loststripe But I still am a little sad about it!

@monorailMy spouse has aphantasia and every time he mentions it a bunch of people go "whoa you mean other people actually see pictures in their minds!?"

I just tried telling my Facebook friends that their lack of image descriptions is really a problem today. They're all experiencing social media today like I always do: people say things like "look at this picture my toddler took of me!" or "for whoever needs to hear it today" and then you can't fucking see the photo or the meme or whatever. Sometimes you can! Sometimes you can't! But it's got heart reacts so other people must be able to see it! Welcome to the world of being partially sighted.

For the days when I wonder why I bother with politics and activism when it's all depressing and tiring, this is a good reminder that I'm actually driven by positivity:"To me, activism is pure positivity. It is passionately affirming humanity by taking note of the places it is most endangered and assailed. It’s being for someone enough to advocate for them when they are vulnerable and marginalized and invisible.Being positive means being fully engaged in real life."https://johnpavlovitz.com/2019/07/06/the-privilege-of-positivity/

Now the heatwave has broken, we're back to temperatures on the high side of normal for summer here (mid-70s F 23-24 C).But it must feel cool to everyone else because today it's only me and the skinny young white girls who are still in skimpy clothes, ha.

"Is anybody in the queue?" the person who'd just arrived asked the hairdresser. (This one doesn't do appointments.)I'm the only person here except the one who's actually getting their hair cut right now so it seems like a bit of an odd question but... *shrug*.It makes me brace myself to hear "just this lady" or something though, but! The hairdresser says "Nope, just this person!"Hairdressers are usually /such/gendered places, this makes me feel good. :heart_agender:

It was actually kind of nice that this wasn't specific to me, either. As I was leaving I said the hairdresser could have a little break since no one else was there. But someone had just walked in behind me so she said "I'm going to cut this person's hair now!" And the person was really femme-presenting so it'd have been very easy to say "this lady" and I just think it's nice that she didn't.Calling a stranger "person" rather than "guy" or "lady" or whatever is something I'm working on myself.

I always think of my mom who, if she's yelling from inside her car at someone else's driving will address the driver as "guy," like "what are you doing, guy?" or "get out of the way, guy" or whatever. But if she looks more closely at the driver and thinks she sees a woman, she'll correct it: "er, lady!" Even as a kid who'd never had a thought about gender, I thought this was weird. She's often insulting the person, they can't hear her anyway, but still she'll correct a perceived misgendering!

Boyfriend wants a picture of me in my wedding attire tomorrow. A rare chance to see Femme Holly, heh.It won't be /that/ femme though, because I'll be working at the wedding and it's outdoors so I want sensible footwear and that means I can't wear the skirt I usually would to a wedding, which is too long for me unless I'm wearing heels.

The number of times native English speakers bleat that we need an English Academy to save the language from whatever their prescriptivist little souls can't cope with... Not only is it a laughable idea afrer English has been allowed to run riot for a millennium, but has it not occurred to them that this academy might not have the purest intentions or the best expertise? Here's a little thread.https://mastodon.social/@garfiald/102580355653638133
