Hi everyone! Glad you’re here on the Fediverse. I have a question for all the #castiron #cookware #cooking people:When you’re cleaning your cast iron frying pans what’s your preferred dishwasher setting?

Parliament deluged by tsunami of submissions> Almost half of the select committee submissions since 1996 have come in this term of Parliament – creating headaches for MPs and staff alike https://newsroom.co.nz/2025/10/20/parliament-deluged-by-tsunami-of-submissions/This is a great example of missing the point. The point is not, "woe us, we have too much democracy". The solution is not, "well we better use AI". The very worst solution is, "we just won't read them".The correct solution is to take away David Seymour's crayons.#NZpol

They’ve arrived! The felted sheep dag wool mats are here. These are the professionally made ones. Looks like they’re using a needle felter to make it, and then die cut the slot and center. Magic! I sniffed the box and confirmed that it’s genuine daggy sheep wool. WowI’ve installed a few. Put one on the kōwhai that’s been having perpetual problems with grass as it doesn’t shade the ground, a standalone Pittosporum (korakia or Gentii or something), and my little Rimu I which recently composted.

You may recall this plant had all the loose wool stolen from it. I put a felted wool mat on it (see second photo in above toot).I just walked past and noticed a bird has been tearing wool off the edge of the felt.I wonder where it’s going!#dag #wool #gardening

Very interesting!FuturFibre are the company that made the #dag #wool and the hemp weed mats that I’m trialing at the moment. That roundabout he mentions smelled very strongly of weed for months and months during construction, well before the weed matting was rolled out. I believe it’s synthetic weed matting because it is far too bright white.Might have to go down there and inspect it a bit closer.@strypey

A reply isn’t always good. “Engagement” isn’t always good. Facebook demonstrated that and now “rage bait” is very popular and very viral. It’s what drives algorithmic social media and that’s shite.I read all your stuff, I think, given that we’re on the same server there are no federation issues. Not all of it requires a reply, in my mind. I remember once there was something we disagreed on and that took 3-4 replies back and forth. Is that what you need?@strypey

Talking to politicians and it’s like that meme where Joey is following what Phoebe is saying and then jumps to completely the wrong conclusion. This is almost word for word a conversation I recently had.Me: We need more solar, less oil.Politician: Oh!!! We’re going to weaken environmental regulations. Under urgency!Aaaaargh!#NZpol

There are plenty of grid scale battery storage or hybrid solar agrivoltaics projects that have been built, are being built, or about to be built. They just don't get very big fanfare:Tauhei Solar Farmhttps://www.1news.co.nz/2024/01/25/construction-due-to-start-this-year-on-nzs-largest-solar-farm/Ruakākā Energy Park, only early 2025https://www.meridianenergy.co.nz/new-projects/ruakaka-energy-parkGlorit Solar farm, in the Kaipara:https://contact.co.nz/about-us/sustainability/our-projects/glorit-solar-farmOngaonga Solar Farm in Hawke's Bay will be built in 2026:https://www.centralines.co.nz/tell-me-about/electricity/major-projects/ongaonga-solar-farm-project/@lightweight

I found out about two of those projects because the guy at Lightsource BP (yes, British Petroleum) who did the 3 year sheep and solar study in Australia did the environmental consulting for Glorit -- a Contact venture -- and also made some positive comments about the Ongaonga Solar Farm. Here's the Glorit project's EPA Fast Track Approval (eek, yes, that fast track) and you'll see it's pending a decision:https://www.epa.govt.nz/fast-track-consenting/nbea-fast-track-projects/glorit-solar-farm/@lightweight

Interview with Peter Beck about Rocket Labs and he brags that the staff carpark is full on Sunday, just like SpaceX.That’s not something to be proud of. That’s embarrassing that you’re squandering the best years of your staff for your own gain. Also comparing against SpaceX is a negative. They’ve spent longer than the Apollo programme took to “move fast and break things”. Another rocket has just exploded at their test facility. Is there a third part to that slogan where they land on the Moon?

I also think the costs of home insurance because your house is built in a dangerous area usually ends up landing on innocent victims and not on the original culprit. The usual story is a developer pressures a local council to allow them to build on some unsuitable land. The council likes the idea of a quick boost in rates (converting the land from river bed to Re$id€ntial). A family puts their last dollar into the mortgage.Due to climate it’s now unsuitable. The family pays.@lightweight

You’ve got quite a good explainer on rates in your thread.I think:Council rates need to go up because of inflation, otherwise we’re getting worse services.More services should be funded via income tax, otherwise the burden falls heavier on those on fixed incomes than on those currently employed who can afford it. @strypey

Decided that before starting on making Xmas Dinner I’d sharpen up the kitchen knives on the grindstone. What an incredible difference that makes. Such amazing technology. Slicing through the vegetables with ease. Now waiting at the hospital. Such amazing technology. Hopefully they can reattach it.*#MicroFiction

Uploading some fuzzy dash cam footage that shows nothing but I swear I saw two ferrets run across the road.Looking on iNaturalist at the map of Mustelid sightings and there are 3 sightings in Australia but Aotearoa NZ is completely covered from top to bottom. They're invasive pests! Why are we losing out so badly?Ridiculous.https://inaturalist.nz/taxa/41770-Mustelidae
