Ok, so I just found out that today's 'Ministry of Ed-mandated' teacher-only day at our boys' high school is so that teachers could have 'professional development' in 'AI' skills, provided by someone from the Google corporation. This is totally corrupt bullshit.

@lightweightSurely there's some OSH thing in place to prevent teacher's brains from being turned into cottage cheese?

@lightweight As I understand as a teacher, ministry of ed doesn't mandate any of the teachers only days. Schools organise the content deliverers and pick the day themselves. That said, there are a pile of AI shills clamoring to give us their reckons for the last few years. As a critic, i have signed up for a couple of online ones in the next couple of weeks, so I report back on how deluded it seems they are.

@lightweight "Ed tech" seems to be corruption all the way down, honestly. Whether Google, Apple, or Microsoft, there's no reason teachers should be expected to acquire tech industry certification.

Did they cover what the school’s response will be if students start using AI to create child sexual abuse material involving their fellow students? That’s an important topic to spend a day educating teachers about.@lightweight

@wxhbxh totally agree. For the past 20 years, the Ministry of Education has been performing an uncontrolled experiment in technology indoctrination on all the public school students in Aotearoa NZ. There is zero pedagogical support for their decisions. None.

@downbeatdan based on the Min of Ed's responses to a couple of my OIA requests, they have effectively imposed BigTech indoctrination on all NZ students for the past 20 years without a shred of pedagogical investigation or justification. There was no investigation of any alternatives. They just do what BigTech tells them to do. It's a giant uncontrolled experiment that they just decided to run. On all our tamariki.

@vik apparently not. Similarly, our tamarikis' brains appear to be fair game.
