I recently had a baby and my OB recommended an IUD for birth control. Any experiences/recommendations/suggestions/stories welcome.I used the nuvaring before so I'm bummed there isn't a progestin-only version of that. I can't see myself breastfeeding for longer than six months so part of me is just wondering if I should stick it out till then with the progestin-only pills, but I'm also stressed I'd miss a day/time with those and they're pretty sensitive to that.

I used to watch Jeopardy as a middle schooler/high schooler and so "liked" their facebook page back in the day. I don't really use facebook anymore except for messages, and now whenever I get on it my feed throws another "Amy Schneider new record-holding woman" post in my face.Gotta say, the posts are getting to me. Amy is quite clearly an AGP (software job, has an ex-wife, transitioned when middle-aged in 2016). Dude is not "female" or a "she" and it's a real shame seeing him treated as Julia Collins' successor and the new inspirational "female" record-holder.

I keep wanting to yell at them, "oh, so if I want to avoid pregnancy I just need to conceptualize myself differently?!"There was a right-wing American politician who about eight years ago claimed that "true" rape never resulted in an unwanted pregnancy because because "women have ways of shutting that stuff down," referring to some sort of magical mental power. It rightly tanked his career, but now the left also talks as if we can think our way out of being female.

GC evangelism question:We know that for a lot of content creators in the women's health space, their erasure of the words "woman" and "female" stems from passionate commenters continuing to niggle them about "inclusive language."To some extent, the squeaky wheel gets the grease, so we can't complain too much if the creators are only getting one message, and that message is always "stop talking about women."Today my favorite women's health writer got these (pressuring, but with cutesy emojis) comments on her article:"I do want to remind y’all that not everyone who has a vagina or gives birth identifies as female/a woman/a mother ❤️❤️❤️.Just always want to remind as we try to move towards more inclusive language 🥰 "So I also decided to respond with this comment:"But it's also useful to have a word that includes all of the half of the population who can potentially experience these issues regardless of their identity. And a word that doesn't just refer to them using their body part as the identifier ('people with vaginas').So sometimes woman and female don't have to refer to identity--they can just describe human biology. I'm glad to see them used at least sometimes as a compromise. Also avoids such confusions as "72 percent of sexually active people of childbearing age off birth control will get pregnant within a year," which can't be true since 50 percent of people unambiguously can't get pregnant due to their anatomy."I've been in GC spaces for a long time, and I know there's no way not to trigger true-believing TRAs, but getting through to normal people is what I'm about. I truly believe "woman" and "female" should always refer to our biology, not our identities, but I'm also about meeting liberal women where they're at, and where they're currently at is wondering whether it's ever ok to use "woman" and "female" in this "exclusionary" sense.I'm hoping this was a rather non-combative but cogent support of keeping "woman" and "female" in the vocabulary for this writer (she's been slowly reducing their usage over time), but would love feedback on how to push back positively and effectively.

@FemaleIsNotAFeeling Totally agree. I guess I'm hoping I can get normie lefty women to listen without turning them off. The type that typically fall for the "inclusive" language-shaming.

@FemaleIsNotAFeeling Someone on ovarit just shared this article with me. I haven't finished reading it yet, but so far it looks comprehensive and excellent.https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fgwh.2022.818856/full

@Cousin_Isobel No, I'm connected to the ex-evangelical/fundamentalist ex-homeschool kid circles, since I grew up in a conservative religious homeschool community. The trajectory here is:-girl grows up in a world where as a woman she is expected to raise a ton of kids for God, shouldn't be too educated, must serve men-she escapes, discovers feminism, discovers she can actually do anything she wants, isn't inferior to men-that's an unstable equilibrium though since trans ideology is dominant in feminism right now, so she falls from there into gender identity ideology...she never felt like a woman (shocker!) so she must not be one at all.

@Cousin_Isobel That's what kills me. In the 2010-2014 range, sane versions of feminism were still dominant in normie internet liberal feminism (though of course transactivists were there on the bleeding tumblr edge of "progress.") This means I got to watch a lot of women leave fundy-land, find freedom, and then end up in a new cult when gender became everything.

@AbolishPregnancy @PonyPanda Hah! I actually agree with you--I didn't know that's what your label meant--I thought you were just antinatalist. Wanting artificial wombs is probably my most controversial and secretly held position.

I woke up this morning to a pleasant surprise in my newsletters. Matthew Yglesias finally got brave...though he majorly buried the lede. Yeah it's way softer on transitioning kids than it should be, but I think it'll get some more progressives to start thinking critically about this stuff.https://www.slowboring.com/p/overtreatment-in-american-health?s=r

The Ricky Gervais bit where he just forcefully yells TRA talking points--and that's all it takes to be funny--is amazing. That is all.

@FemaleIsNotAFeeling Doing pretty well! Just got a lot of plates spinning. I'm a first-time mom as of November, and I've been on leave since then, which has meant keeping a baby alive + keeping up halfway with academia since actually being gone for that long would prob end my career. I've kept up with a bit of volunteer work too but that's meant less time for just fun chatting.I'm nearing the end of maternity leave and with that all of the woman-specific demands of having a kid (pregnancy + breastfeeding), so that's exciting to me. I'm excited about parenting in general, but never was interested in the baby stage. Now that I have one of my own my perspective is more positive but I'm still more excited about when the kid gets older. My husband is going to be the primary caregiver for the second half of the baby's first year (his leave kicks in a week from now), so the pressure of being "always on" all the time regarding my baby (as much as I love him) will be over soon.

Just started reading the Emily Bazelon NYT article--and I'm sure there will be plenty in it that irritates me language-wise, but can I just say that I love how she handled the AFAB/AMAB terminology here?1. She puts it in quotes, which makes the reader realize this is some odd phrase that certain people use, as opposed to a straightforwardly scientifically correct term. Adding "parlance" as the descriptor also emphasizes that.2. She adds "current," as if to acknowledge the constantly changing "correct" language of transworld.3. It's all so subtle that it can be published in NYT. She uses the required "AFAB" and "trans boy," and yet still manages to plant a seed of doubt there.

Out of the loop:Someone on twitter was claiming Joshua Moon (the kiwifarms guy) is now offering DDOS services for GC sites after he had to set up a new solution for Kiwifarms. Is this true? Just curious. Not a big fan of KF but admire Moon's dedication to putting it back up after Cloudflare "cancelled" it. A hard-fought win for speech on the internet.

Today in trans-identified-male nonsense: Emily St. James (formerly Emily Van der Werf, who tried to get vox co-founder Matt Yglesias cancelled from his own company because he signed the same open letter JK Rowling did) has announced “I just had a dang baby” while posting a photo in a hospital patient chair wrapped up with the baby like somehow this guy actually just gave birth.Meanwhile a day later St. James posts a picture of his wife who actually gave birth “because you wanted to see her” (yeah it’s not like like the big question isn’t usually “is mom doing ok?”) with caption “the baby seems to like her” and she’s actually sitting in another chair in the hospital room like she didn’t actually just give birth.Except she did. Just a couple of days earlier she posted about the pain of Foley bulb induction and her concerningly high blood pressure (hmmm…maybe that’s why people wanted to see she was ok…huh Emily St. James?) I feel sorry for Libby. She got married before St. James transitioned and probably had no idea she’d have to play act that her husband just gave birth, despite doing all the actual work and shouldering all the health risks herself.

My husband: "the people I follow on twitter all fall into two camps--Ukrainian OSINT accounts and UK TERFS."Well it only took five years but I finally got him sucked into the gender wars. 🤣
