My lunch-hour thought: I think one of the most mind-expanding concepts I recently learned, that helps me better understand psychological personality understanding, is that we all have personality *patterns*, but we don't all have personality *disorders*, though sometimes our personality style may share a name w/ a disorder. For instance, we may have a mildly "obsessive" personality pattern, (list-making, order-seeking) but it's just our orientation. Ditto narcissistic, schizoid .. #Psychology

I'm glad no one banned "The Fountainhead" when I was a kid, for otherwise how would I have read it and found out how self-serious a well-known novel could be?

I found this article by a Tennessee obstetrician persuasive. She argues that to fight criminalizing anti-abortion bills pro-choice advocates should really consider supporting specific state compromises responding to new state bans that allow doctors to safely treat more women. So far, they don’t want to compromise. But, “For the foreseeable future, this is a state [not federal] issue,” she writes. Time to get local. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/16/opinion/medical-exceptions-abortion-tennessee.html?unlocked_article_code=weqNQxq3XB97nEUtMzfK_0R1RlK6Chdp8Z-NLnAjKpDNvTzVip3kGgH3nUs2wZQ20-vVViBcSD19cj_NhwmIYoafp1Ma6zJHHw-VQ2BX5uDdgPs4AhySebBUfIC9g2roCFCWT8PTCOwNloSe6GIhQXLuqQ1fl6cJJ-WMzn5nxrwRHF1eWT2vZjiWf7QNJopMuPudiiKbRQX0natqSNlCVgR9Cq7wGoVU2SeAKTqdDdWpcbIon4P3GKUqHW7UdzmZ46t5inOPWEyVDJ6fuf0BRjHsSm5l4XAQQNssiCXRUfEE03Q52Eb0AP-WsfOx2blI4N41YA5NhzK27rMZJWejT3uAM9G_JJljjyvIrLbHyQ&smid=url-share

@cstross do you know whether sites have to say somewhere publicly whether they are using a chatbot/whether users are interacting with a computer or are reading something put together by a nonhuman?

@cstross thank you. I hope the laws start catching up. I would like a “warning label.” And maybe I will ask, if ever I have to “chat” with a corporation: “are you a real person?”

One thing I don't quite understand about the suit is this: If I were to publish a book, and it were within copyright, and then someone donated a copy of my book to the Internet Archive (or the archive purchased it), could that copy then be checked out by many people at once? Or one at a time? Or it depends?/ Does this cut authors out of royalties in a new way, is part of my question ... #Books

@Seller11 I understand a library to be a place where 1 person checks out 1 copy of a book (or copies of books). Then that particular copy is "spoken for" till it is returned. I am trying to understand whether the Internet Archive would be a library in that sense. One copy of one book at one time to one person.

@Seller11 To your questions, I do support libraries, and the physical used-book market is one I utilize frequently. Especially once I learned that we consumers don't "own" our ebooks, just like libraries don't exactly. I don't quite understand how royalties flow to authors & copyright holders from libraries vis-a-vis ebooks. I also don't understand how ebook royalties work in general.

Expand housing: I am nervous about whether Kathy Hochul's housing compact -- which I'm into, because I hope it can make it easier for people to stay here in New York -- will pass, but at least here in Westchester, it's getting a lot of attention and support from officials and maybe even businesses: https://www.lohud.com/story/news/local/westchester/2023/03/17/hochul-in-rye-brook-talks-housing-business-westchester/70012154007/#WestchesterCounty #NewYork #Housing
