       @cstross do you know whether sites have to say somewhere publicly whether they are using a chatbot/whether users are interacting with a computer or are reading something put together by a nonhuman?

       @elizamccarthy I'm fairly sure the law hasn't caught up with chatbots yet, so there's no legal requirement to indicate whether text is human or machine generated. Also: the web is international, and in any given jurisdiction, laws may be flouted.

       @cstross thank you. I hope the laws start catching up. I would like a “warning label.” And maybe I will ask, if ever I have to “chat” with a corporation: “are you a real person?”

       @elizamccarthy @cstross To be honest, law generally hasn't really caught up with even email & websites on a conceptual basis, let alone encryption & pseudo-AI; there's just loads of ad hoc legislation to patch up whatever particular mischief has come to legislators attention at any given time

       @elizamccarthy @cstross If you’ve ever been on a website and had a little window pop up asking if you need assistance, that’s probably a simple bot that doesn’t use ChatGPT.It’ll run through a script not unlike the annoying multiple choice phone menus you get when calling a pharmacy.Eventually if you need something it can’t handle it may connect you with a real person.
