My lunch-hour thought: I think one of the most mind-expanding concepts I recently learned, that helps me better understand psychological personality understanding, is that we all have personality *patterns*, but we don't all have personality *disorders*, though sometimes our personality style may share a name w/ a disorder. For instance, we may have a mildly "obsessive" personality pattern, (list-making, order-seeking) but it's just our orientation. Ditto narcissistic, schizoid .. #Psychology

@elizamccarthy Ah! The problem is the medicalisation of personality. The subtle (if real) barrier between disorder and pattern is a) in the eye of the beholder; and b) a socio-medical construct made by, in general, white males. I dislike the term mist strongly.

@Dwinle @elizamccarthy@mstdn.social It almost seems like the DSM inadvertently caused therapists to start thinking only in disorder terms! but there is so much more to it, I agree ... I don't know whether you were ever on Twitter, but over there, the therapist Jonathan Shedler introduces this theme all the time, very helpful I think!

@elizamccarthy@zirk.us @elizamccarthy@mstdn.social My dislike of the DSM series which increases in content as fast as a drug company can sponsor research into a new set of symptoms and get the diagnosis in print. When childhood bipolar disorder was added the company who sponsored the research made millions of dollars. I am aware of Shedler’s work. 🙏🏻

@Dwinle @elizamccarthy@zirk.us I really think a big magazine or newspaper story about the DSM and how it's affected psychotherapy is in order
