Instagram and FB have been blocking accounts that support Bernie. I am blocking them in the hosts files of every router and workstation I admin. I think all sysadmins should do the same. cut the bastards off.

@tek I still don’t get why the old base on mare island was a no go given the like I dunno, maybe 2,000 people live there when school is in session, which most aren’t currently or hell quarantine everybody on angel island, which maybe has 2 full time inhabitants that could easily be relocated... or Alcatraz... or like anywhere but right by a very populated city. WTF.

@salixlucida my old boss said that many are owned by Chinese real estate investors as kind of place-holder businesses. I’m not sure if that’s true or some type of xenophobic hypothesis but I suppose it’s possible. But I think it’s one of those things where out in SE you have a lot of homeless people with stuff and nowhere affordable or transient to put it. So I think probably to capitalize off the needs of that population probably is a big part.

@tek well at least they didn’t do it on alameda. But Mare Island also used to be a naval base, should have capacity for big ships, but I guess the side where they might dock would probably be very close to the ferry building. I am sure it’s pretty likely to be fine where it’s at, but they have a lot of logistical issues moving people from there safely.

@tek I keep thinking this is one of those clickbait stories that you don't dare click on unless you want to go down a rabbit hole of where are they now scenarios that never come close to explaining the ridiculous headline. Does anybody know of any work from home opportunities right now? I am asking both for myself and a friend, both could use help getting through the quarantine. My friend does audio engineering as well as GIS work and has done conservation work in the past. I have been a personal chef, but before that worked in tech. I am proficient with *nix, Python, Julia, Bash, Apache, Nginx, MongoDB, (LAMP components) I’m comfortable with command line tools also good with analog electronics. Thanks.

Getting people organized for a rent strike is pretty difficult even when many of the tenants are just not paying because they can’t afford to. I mean, wouldn’t you rather have not paying make a point with the potential for opening up negotiations? If you are not going to pay anyway flex some muscle while you do it. If Americans can’t learn to work together for their own common good, this covid disaster is going to be dramatically amplified and the poor will be annihilated.
