Just got an email from my state rep explaining how and why they're docking a cruise ship with coronavirus just up-channel from my house. You've gotta do that *somewhere*, and this was the best place they could find, but I still am less than thrilled that I'll be able to see it from my upstairs window.

@tek You could probably rent that window spot to a CNN team for $$$.

@tek I still don’t get why the old base on mare island was a no go given the like I dunno, maybe 2,000 people live there when school is in session, which most aren’t currently or hell quarantine everybody on angel island, which maybe has 2 full time inhabitants that could easily be relocated... or Alcatraz... or like anywhere but right by a very populated city. WTF.

@curufuin The official explanation I heard was that Port of Oakland has the only piers that are deep enough, and that this pier also has a huge empty zone with fences where they can station guards to ensure a wide buffer.

@erosdiscordia I’m not too worried, but it’s still eerie to look at.

@tek well at least they didn’t do it on alameda. But Mare Island also used to be a naval base, should have capacity for big ships, but I guess the side where they might dock would probably be very close to the ferry building. I am sure it’s pretty likely to be fine where it’s at, but they have a lot of logistical issues moving people from there safely.
